On Sunday June 28th, the first-ever Atheist Film Festival will be held at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco's Mission District from 12pm to midnight. Feature-length films will be shown in the 240-seat theater, short films in the small 46-seat screening room. The festival is sponsored by San Francisco Atheists.

Worcester’s Albanian Festival came together this year over the weekend of June 5th – 7th at Saint Mary’s Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church. The festival celebrated the culture and tradition of Worcester’s large Albanian community.

Renowned leftist intellectual, linguist and author Noam Chomsky discussed democracy, the economy and global crises June 12 at Riverside Church in Harlem. Chomsky joins a list of other prestigious politicians and activists to speak at the historic Riverside Church, including Martin Luther King, Jr., the Dalai Llama and Desmond Tutu.

Over 2,000 people attended the event, which benefited the social change group the Brecht Forum. Chomsky’s hour-long talk, entitled “Crisis and Hope: Theirs and Ours,” addressed a range of social and political topics. He examined U.S. political policies over the past few decades and encouraged the audience to challenge neoliberalism, military intervention and capitalism.

On Wednesday, May 27, members of "Achoti" (my sister), a feminist organization representing jews of color (Mizrahim-Jews who emigrated from Arab countries) and members of the Democratic Mizrahi Rainbow, came to the Jerusalem Theater to demonstrate a convention about culture in Israel. The activists held signs that looked like bank checks with names of cultural institutions and the amount of money given to each. One check (in the picture below), addressed to "Mizrahi culture" had no money on it and the wording "void" was added.

A reflection on means and ends.

The bigoted ads [against Proposition 8] were placed on newspaper Web sites in three Eastern states last month — by "Californians Against Hate"!! The ad was rejected by the Kennebec Journal in Maine, which said that the copy "borders on insulting and denigrating a whole set of people based on their religion." Right on, Kennebec Journal!

At 9AM on Tuesday April 28th, somewhere between 50-70 people came to the iconic Park Street Church across from Boston Common to attend an Exodus Ministries training. Attendees watched a video wherein 'former homosexuals' and 'former lesbians' spoke of the power of god to heal 'sexual brokenness' and restore heterosexual desires to the most fallen of souls. During the 'male homosexuality' portion of the training, 'former homosexual' Jeff Buchanan shared his experience of having turned from his homosexual past, as well as the causes of male homosexuality, which include resentment of male authority and lack of bonding with fathers. This had been going on for quite some time when Jason Lydon, pastor of the Community Church of Boston, whom the event organizers had foolishly invited, stood up and informed the attendees of their culpability in the suicides of two eleven year old boys in April 2009, both prompted by anti-gay bullying.

News is starting to come in about a non-violent demonstration that took place over the weekend at Blackwater's training camp in Jo Davies County, northwest Illinois. Among 22 who were arrested in the demonstration, four were members of the local St. Jude Catholic Worker House. They delivered this message...

It looks like Robert Spencer of "Jihad Watch" is going to be hosted by the latest in white supremacist groups called "Youth For Western Civilization" - Monday April 27, 2009, American University. Anyone who knows the exact time or where on campus, please post it in the comment section to keep us informed.

"Youth For Western Civilization" has been declared a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. People should please come out to voice opposition to this growing trend of campus hate "The Youth For Western Civilization" has been trying to incite in colleges all over the country.

In Virginia, the Westboro Baptist Church started off its tour by first visiting Fairfax High School. Most of the counter protestors expressed confusion at this choice of venue, as Fairfax High School has not done anything newsworthy with regards to the LGBTQ community. It was later revealed that Westboro chose the high school as a target because of Fairfax High School's Rebel mascot; Church members claim that Fairfax High School was an example of how America rebels against god. Police at Fairfax High School were nervous and on-edge, but no altercations occurred.

The Westboro crowd then moved to George Mason U to protest that school's Pride Week. The five WBC members were met by a diverse crowd of counter-protesters numbering in the low hundreds. Police at this event were out in even greater number, but their disposition seemed more bored than anything else. About 900 New York City Jews participated in a twenty-four hour protest outside the World Zionist Organization and Jewish Agency offices on 3rd Ave. between 40 and 41st St. in Manhattan, calling for justice for the Palestinian people and an end to the occupation of Palestine. A banner drop over New York City's entrance to the Cross Bronx Expressway, at 179th Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan, carried out by members of Jews Against the Occupation/NYC, declared "Free Palestine." This action by Jewish New Yorkers continued the wave of increasingly public Jewish solidarity with the Palestinians recently targeted by the Israeli government's attack on the Gaza Strip, which killed over 1,300 people. Four banners were hung from overpasses on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and a fifth near the U.S.S. Intrepid on the West Side Highway in January.

Conservative Portland Catholic Archbishop John Vlazny recently attended the right-to-life protest at Pionner Square against women's rights with 7,000 other conservatives. Since then, he gave a series of talks at Beaverton's Lady of Peace retreat center on job openings in the Catholic Church and conservative Catholic values.
