Two Minneapolis Marches Snake Through Skyways; In Cairo, Gaza Freedom March is Still Stuck

On Wednesday, December 30, about 100 people marched through the Minneapolis skyways in solidarity with the Gaza Freedom March. During the demonstration, some people spoke on the phone with Minnesotans in Cairo, Egypt, where the Gaza Freedom March is being obstructed from entering Palestine. Nearly 2,000 internationals have intended to enter Gaza through Egypt to join an estimated 50,000 Palestinians on a march ending a mile from the Israeli border wall. SE Portland Urban Farmers Announce 2010 Pepetual Seed Kit

SE Portland Urban Farmers seek help with seed increase in conjunction with a larger project to breed superior varieties and have enough seed on hand, no matter what happens, to feed town. For a 100% sliding scale contribution, you can help out and have a garden for life - check it out, be part of the project, and help your local farmer out.

It's scheming, planning and assessing time for farmers once the hard freeze comes, as it did on 9 December. Your humble Urban Farmers haven't been totally idle during these shortest of days: I got a darn good idea. I've spent the last few weeks fleshing it all out and securing the necessary support from the other farmers to make it happen. The SE Seedbank Project will involve folks in ways that go way beyond keg parties w/ the 2010 Perpetual Seed Kit. This came out of an idea of Calliope's called the Neighbourhood Foodshed Alliance, where we go even further to reduce travel distance for food by connecting folks w/ their neighbourhood farmer.

But, that's neither here nor there! So....

Gaza one year later. Coverge of the December 27, 2009 demonstration

More than 1,300 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip were killed during 22 days of Israeli shelling from sea, air and land. Palestinians in Gaza had nowhere to flee from Israel's onslaught as the border has been closed.

On December 27, 2008, Israel began its bombardment on Gaza and then on January 3, 2009 began its ground offensive. The bloody operation in Gaza came after the expiration of a six-month-long ceasefire between Israel and resistance groups in Gaza, including Hamas. However, Israel failed to ease the embargo on the Gaza Strip that continues to cripple economic life further creating a humanitarian crisis, and was one of Israel's obligations under the ceasefire. Although Israel unilaterally withdrew its illegal settler population from the Gaza Strip in 2005, it remained the occupying power as it controlled the borders, sea and airspace, as well as the population registry.

A December 2009 report prepared by Oxfam International, Amnesty International UK, United Civilians for Peace, Christian Aid, and a dozen other international NGOs found that even one year later, Due to the Israeli embargo which blocks goods and equipment from entering Gaza, Gaza residents are being prevented from rebuilding the extensive damage to their shattered society. Many feel that the world community and Arab world have done little to stop Israel, despite the pledged aid for the re-building of Gaza. Here in Houston hundreds gathered to commemorate the 1 year anniversary of the Israeli attack on Gaza. [full article with audio]

Iran's Revolution vs. the Democrats

On Sunday in Iran, mass protests were drowned in blood by government authorities; at least ten reportedly have been killed with hundreds injured. The events have been given ample coverage in the U.S. media, with the intention of further demonizing Iran’s repressive government. Absent in the American media are the deeper implications of the protests, which, to anyone paying close attention, constitute a powerful revolutionary movement. This movement has grown exponentially in a very short period of time. Although only beginning in June over allegations of voter fraud, the movement is now endorsed by millions of combative Iranians, demanding “death to the dictator,” while they waive an Iranian flag that’s missing the Muslim insignia. Massive demonstrations in the streets and university campuses have directly confronted police repression and in some cases have overcome it. The New York Times describes a scene found only in instances of revolution: “There were scattered reports of police officers surrendering, or refusing to fight. Several videos posted on the Internet show officers holding up their helmets and walking away from the melee, as protesters pat them on the back in appreciation. In one photograph, several police officers can be seen holding their arms up, and one of them wears a bright green headband, the signature color of the opposition movement.” (December 27, 2009).

Fire your bank!! Put $$ in credit unions

Too-big-to-fail banks are profiting from bailout dollars and government guarantees, and growing bigger.

WE can make the difference. It is time to “fire your bank” and put money in your local credit union. I’ve used the Rogue Federal Credit Union (RFCU) since they started in a house on Peach Street in Medford, Oregon back in the early 70’s… They rock!  https://roguefcu.org

Last year after getting upset with these banks that were “too big to fail” and had received OUR taxpayer money to bail ‘em out I did some exploration about the RFCU to find out about its investments. I went up to a teller at the Ashland branch of the RFCU and said, “I want to talk to the most important person here” and before the day was over I was on the phone with the credit union’s CEO Gene Pelham. Not long after I was able to interview Mr. Pelham on my radio show at KSKQ here in Ashland, Oregon.

On the Brain Labor Report for March 30, 2009 we interview Gene Pelham, President and CEO of the Rogue Federal Credit Union, a credit union which focuses on Southern Oregon > > > Listen or Download Here:  http://ia331427.us.archive.org/1/items/BrainLaborReportMarch30/blr20090330.mp3

OIympic torch protests: challenging a deceitful tradition

In December, members of Genesee Valley Earth First! and others from Rochester participated in demonstrations against the Olympic torch relay in Canada. We did so because environmental destruction knows no borders, and the games have a sordid history of displacing the poor while legitimizing colonialism and authoritarianism. The torch relay itself was born in Nazi Germany to spotlight the fascist government’s supremacist propaganda.

Annise Parker is inaugurated and dance party defeats homophobes

In Houston, Annise Parker became the Mayor of the nations 4th largest city. The openly gay Parker took her oath today in front of a thousand supporters – her long-time partner held the bible upon which she swore. Outside, a handful of protestors from the Westboro Baptist Church held hate filled signs and were met by about 40 counter protestors who held a dance party in celebration – Chuck Jackson was among them.

“Most of us there know that the Westboro Baptist Church’s message of hate is ridiculous and it’s pointless, but we didn’t want the mainstream media to show up and film them without a visible critique of their presence. Our music and our dancing was a kind of joyful expression of inclusion designed to counter their dourness and hostility.”

Voters in Texas have outlawed gay marriage and a Houston city referendum on granting benefits to same-sex partners of city employees failed [article and link to audio]. Counter protesters responded to calls for a Big Happy Dance Party and pumped up the jams till the Westboro Baptists went back to Kansas. [see photos from the protest]

Albertsons Illegal Coupon Food Stamp Tax

Ashland, Oregon Albertsons charges an Oregon mom tax for using coupons and paying with food stamps.

The extra charges happened randomly and never added up to much, but fifty cents here and a dollar there eventually started nagging at her conscience. Why was an Oregon mom charged a "tax" at Albertsons when she used coupons and paid with food stamps? She tested several theories and finally concluded that this "tax" was charged only at the Ashland, Oregon store when she used manufacturer coupons and Catalina coupons.

Clare Bayard Writes on The Ethnic Cleansing in East Jerusalem

Clare Bayard, from Dialogues Against Militarism, writes: In Silwan, a neighborhood of East Jerusalem adjacent to the Old City, Palestinian families sometimes demolish their own homes when the notice comes because they can't afford to pay the fines levied upon people after the army bulldozes their houses. Sometimes the eviction notice gives them days, and other times a few hours to pull out several generations' of possessions before the house is demolished. Sometimes people are given 15 minutes to get out of their house before tear gas is fired through the windows.

In the last Oregon legislative session we worked hard to successfully defeat House Bill 3058, the LNG Fast-track bill. That bill that would have undermined property rights and threatened natural resources by allowing pipeline and utility companies to get permits to fill wetlands on private lands without landowner permission, thereby hastening the permitting process for LNG-related pipelines. Now, Senator Metsger is proposing the same bill for the February Special Session and we need to tell our elected leaders that this is not acceptable!

Raymond Merchant Case Update: Trial Date April 5th - Support Needed!

On December 31st, Raymond Merchant appeared in front of Hennepin County Judge Barnette for a scheduling of his trial date. After brief discussion in chambers, Judge Barnett, the prosecutor, and Raymond's attorney Robert Kolstad settled on trial beginning Monday April 5th at 9am. The trial is expected to last three or four days including jury selection.

Kolstad said of their trial preparations, "This is going to be a tough trial and we have a lot of work to do. There was no actual proof of robbery on Ray, no gun was found, and there was never an actual police lineup of suspects, but we still have our job cut out for us. We're thankful to have a number of volunteers who will help with the investigation."

Anouncing the IMC Computer Help Desk

The Urbana-Champaign community has had a deficit of realistic personal
computer support options since Prairienet faded away.

The existing options for computer support in Urbana-Champaign are
limited to Best Buy's Geek Squad, two or three local businesses and
UIUC's CITES. These organizations discriminate through cost and
association between those they will serve and those they won't. Geek
Squad's services start at exhorbitant prices or require subscriptions
to service plans. Local business support services may be less
expensive, but they still charge astronomical rates for what can be
quite simple procedures. CITES only serves students, faculty and staff
of the UI. Worse, for-profit support services such as Geek Squad have
an interest in misleading users about their computers. Geek Squad
offers ill-defined and suspicious services such as "Computer
Tune-up". These services are often nothing more than a collection of
easy system maintenance procedures such as performing updates or
uninstalling unused software.

But the real crime of companies like Geek Squad is their lack of

Cracked - Texas continues to send mentally retarded prisoners to death row

Despite a U.S. Supreme Court ban, Texas has continued to send mentally retarded criminals to death row. Will a Mexican immigrant's case correct this injustice?
In 2002, six years after Daniel Plata landed on Death Row, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a case called Atkins v. Virginia that “executions of mentally retarded criminals are cruel and unusual.” Even though mentally disabled people can understand the difference between right and wrong, the court reasoned that they are less able to control impulsive behavior or learn from mistakes. The court supported its decision by pointing to bans on executing the mentally retarded in 17 states and in federal cases as “evolving standards of decency.”

Censored: Forgotten People on Black Mesa

January 10, 2010 - The mainstream media continued aiding and abetting the dirty coal industry this week, in the genocidal targeting of American Indian lands for toxic and polluting industries that the rest of the world doesn't want in their backyards.

Hopi and Navajo fighting Peabody Coal mining on Black Mesa celebrated a victory this week when the US Interior Dept. rejected a mining permit for Peabody Coal. It is a victory that the majority of the mainstream media is ignoring. Hopi and Navajo have made it easy for even the laziest journalist, or the newspaper without a dime for travel, to cover the story. There are press statements online with abundant quotes from the Hopi and Navajo who took the action and live on the land. Their phone numbers are also on their press statements, so the mainstream media has no excuse. Censored News will even send the judge's order by e-mail to anyone that requests it.

It seems the mainstream media doesn't want to admit the truth about mining on Black Mesa. Journalists do not want to take the time to understand the facts.

The Iranian Nuke Forgeries

CIA Determines Documents Were Fabricated U.S. intelligence has concluded that the document published recently by the Times of London, which purportedly describes an Iranian plan to do experiments on what the newspaper described as a "neutron initiator" for an atomic weapon, is a fabrication, according to a former Central Intelligence Agency official. The Times of London story published Dec. 14 did not identify the source of the document. But it quoted "an Asian intelligence source" - a term some news media have used for Israeli intelligence officials - as confirming that his government believes Iran was working on a neutron initiator as recently as 2007.

Gus Ganley Wins $70,000 Settlement Resulting From August 2007 Critical Mass

Another legal victory! The Minneapolis City Council Ways & Means Committee has just approved a $70,800 settlement in a case filed by Gus Ganley and his attorney, Jordan Kushner, resulting from the August 31, 2007 Critical Mass ride.

That was the Critical Mass ride one year before the RNC, which the Minneapolis Police decided to use as a test case, beating, arresting, tasering, and macing a number of the participants for no cause. Gus was among those arrested, maced and abused. He was held overnight and eventually charged with assaulting a police officer and obstructing the legal process using force - both gross misdemeanors - and fleeing a police officer, a misdemeanor. Police Murder Trial: Community Demands for Justice for Victim Oscar Grant.

The first hearing of the Mehserle murder trial in Southern California took place on Friday January 8, 2010. The 7am gathering and press conference in front of the L.A. Superior Court Building was in many ways a meet-and-greet between the newly formed LA Coalition For Justice for Oscar Grant and representatives from Oakland.

The Oakland coalition originally formed itself out of a spontaneous rebellion when Mehserle, a BART police officer, shot Oscar Grant in the back execution style last New Year’s day. The coalition and the Oakland community insured, through a relentless effort, that the cop would be tried for murder and not a lesser charge.

When the trial was moved to Los Angeles after the Mehserle defense argued that he couldn’t obtain a fair trail in Alameda County, the Los Angeles community banded together in a show of strength to show solidarity with the Oakland coalition and the family of Oscar Grant in order to guarantee a conviction of the police officer.

Happy New Year, For Tenants Nothing's Changed!

slumlord cartoon Ask yourself, how many landlords made New Year's resolutions that included, "This year I'm going to be more compassionate to my tenants." Or more practically, "This year, I'm going to treat my tenants like I would have them treat me—like human beings." Unfortunately, 2009 proved for many big-city tenants that the golden rule was promiscuously traded for gold. Why would 2010 be any different?

In my blog post, Tenants, Thugs and CDOs, I summarized several articles outlining the effect of the predatory equity meltdown on tenants... Read More by Dave Crow

New TV show addresses police brutality: Eye on Justice

Eye on Justice to air locally, online

In metropolitan Minnesota, Comcast pays a price for its media monopoly. The internet, cable, phone, and billboard company's contract monopolizing the cable TV running throughout the Twin Cities mandates opening several cable channels to locally produced PEG-- Public, Education, and Government programming.

Groundbreaking new shows are being prepared to air on Minneapolis Television Network and St. Paul Neighborhood Network, like a news/talk show about police brutality and local politics: Eye On Justice. This project is an effort of the entirely volunteer-driven grassroots group, Communities United Against Police Brutality, to reach out to the public and open people's eyes to some famous cases of police misconduct.

While 2009 was a great year in many respects it was also a turdfest. But you have to call em’ like you see em’. The first step in solving a problem is identifying it and that's what we are here to do. Problem is, we all live in a glass house yet we must throw these stones. Demand US Bank stop hurting the unemployed

OREGON'S UNEMPLOYED DESERVE A BREAK

Holding an incredibly powerful position to exploit unemployed Oregonians US Bank has spent big bucks to defeat measures 66 and 67 in the current January 26, 2010 election.

US Bank is the largest bank in Oregon. It is also the issuer of the ReliaCard, a "prepaid Visa" card through which out-of-work Oregonians receive their unemployment benefits. As a result, hundreds of thousands of US Bank's unemployed customers would get a tax cut if Oregonians vote YES for tax fairness. However, US Bank is opposing these efforts. It is simple - if the big banks win, out of work Oregonians will lose.

This issue is further explained by Tax Fairness Oregon. Go to their website and get the details and SIGN THE PETITION demanding the US Bank stop hurting its unemployed customers.

Call for Solidarity and Funds for the Working People of Haiti!

From Miami Autonomy and Solidarity

A natural disaster has descended upon Haiti whose scope we only are seeing the surface of at this time. The Haitian people will be struggling to rebuild their lives and their home possibly for decades in light of unprecedented collapse, both physical and social. Yet despite the unpredictability of earthquakes, this disaster is unnatural, a monstrosity of our time. The extent of the damage of the earthquake is part of the cost of unrestrained exploitation which at every step put profit above the health, safety, and well being of the Haitian people. While the world watches on ready to help, power is being dealt an opportunity. The Haitian workers and peasants have been fighting for their rights to even the most basic level of existence for decades, while the UN-occupying force, the state, and the ruling elites maintain the social misery without relenting. Now as Port-Au-Prince is in rubble, new opportunities arise for rulers to rebuild Haiti in their own interests, and likewise for the Haitian workers and peasants to assert their right to their own Haiti, one where they will be not be forced to live in dangerous buildings, and work merely to fill the pockets of elites, foreign or domestic.

As we move from watching in horror to taking decisive action, progressives can offer an alternative. There is a strong and beautiful desire to do something, to help others in this time of need. Our actions are strongest when we organize ourselves, and make a concerted effort in unity. Right now we can have the deepest impact by committing ourselves to act in solidarity with the autonomous social movements of Haiti directly. They present the best possible option for the Haitian people, and are in the greatest need. At the same time, we are in the best position to help them out our common interest as people engaged in struggling against a system that works to exploit us all. We are calling for solidarity people-to-people engaged in common struggle. It is not only a question of money for AID but also an autonomous and independent act of international solidarity that illuminates the bankruptcy of the occupying forces, multinational corporations, and Haitian elites that are primarily responsible for the decayed state of Haiti. There will be aid flowing and money given as a form of charity until the next disaster. Our act of solidarity should, in no shape or form, be solely an act of humanitarian aid. It should not be an apolitical act, and we shouldn’t give the green light to those that wish to capitalize on the suffering of others. It should be an act of solidarity to the struggling people of Haiti and their organizations while at the same time rejecting the totally inept Haitian elites and their state apparatus for bankrupting Haiti. The earthquake is a natural disaster, but the state of Haiti, the abject poverty of the masses and the vile injustice of the social order, are unnatural.

We have a relationship with one organization, Batay Ouvriye, and are putting our resources and time into helping Batay Ouvriye to help rebuild from the catastrophe and maintain the struggle for a better Haiti and a better world. Batay Ouvriye is a combative grassroots worker and peasant?s organization in Haiti with workers organized all over Haiti, especially in the Industrial sweatshops and Free Trade Zones. We have set up a means to send money to Batay Ourviye. If others wish to send money to Batay Ouvriye, please use paypal here DONATE NOW.

Grassroots Organizations Call For Solidarity After Earthquake Devastates Haiti

Grassroots organizations in Haiti are struggling to ensure their voices are not lost amidst the outpouring of donations to traditional NGOs and religious charities. Meanwhile, on Friday, the Obama administration granted undocumented Haitians currently in the United States temporary protection status, a move pushed for by immigrant advocates since December of 2008. It's unclear what exactly this means for Haitians like activist Jean Montrevil currently in immigration detention. But Obama also recruited former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton to lead relief efforts, and and one of the more popular places to donate, Yele Haiti, has echoed calls for U.S. military intervention in Haiti, the poorest nation in the Americas.

Southeast Oregon Plans a Coyote Killing Derby this Weekend

"That a state government agency would foster such a puerile, violent form of entertainment is morally unacceptable, and the logic behind it is nonsense. No one has undertaken a scientific study on the effects of the random killing of coyotes. In fact, as coyotes flee human threat, they regroup and reproduce, without the natural selection and competition of a large community of coyotes."

Beginning this weekend, hunters in southeast Oregon will host a killing derby, where "as many coyotes as possible" will be killed for prizes such as rifles, binoculars and scopes.

According to a 13 January Big Game Hunt notice, the derby will run from 16 January through the 17th throughout Lake, Malheur, Harney, and Klamath counties. The event will be headquartered in Silver Lake, Oregon, where the final winners will be determined.

Brandon from Houston IVAW featured on BBC: Reconciling Guantanamo

Brandon Neely is one of the founders of Houston Iraq Veterans against the War and was spoken out at length about his experiences in the Army in Iraq, and as a military police officer at Camp X Ray in Guantanamo, Cuba. Brandon participated in the Winter Soldier Gathering in Austin, and has spoken with the UC Davis based Center for the Study of Human Rights in the Americas, and on the Rachel Maddow Show.

This most recent story about Brandon by the BBC is amazing in that it shows the capacity and courage of individuals to make amends and stand up for justice. Brandon takes the really brave step of reaching out to folks detained in Guantanamo with the goal of apologizing for the mistreatment they experienced being detained by the US military, and the role that he played in it.

It is also quite brave of Shafiq and Ruhal to be willing to meet with Brandon and speak about their experience on television as well to accept his apology. Shafiq and Ruhal both appreciate Brandon's apology, and his sharing his experiences about Guantanamo, because it corroborates the story they have been telling, which was meet with skepticism by a public, where large sectors of the population buy into the mainstream media narrative that everyone detained at Guantanamo was a terrorist, and for that matter, that most muslims are terrorists. While Shafiq and Ruhal really appreciate Brandon's apology, they put the blame where it belongs saying "I dont hold you responsible" and "its the government that needs to apologize" [read full article]

10,000+ March Against Joe Arpaio in Phoenix

Police unleash pepper gas on non-violent protesters; 5 arrested

More than 10,000 demonstrators came out on January 16 to protest against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his repression of unauthorized immigrants. In the latest and largest in a series of protests against Sheriff Joe, demonstrators marched to MCSO's "tent city", an urban concentration camp where inmates, many arrested on immigration charges, are held 24-7 in the open air.

While marchers focused on Arpaio's 287g arrangement with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement and his high-profile immigration raids, other participants questioned the focus on immigration alone, given the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office's role in foreclosure evictions, and also that the Phoenix Police Department turned over more unauthorized migrants to ICE in fiscal year 2009 than did Arpaio's sheriff's department.

Cort Guitar Workers Action

This week, workers fired from the Cort guitar plants in Korea came to Southern California to demand their jobs back with a series of actions targeting the NAMM trade show, a global trade show for the musical instrument industry. Cort, known as a midrange guitar brand, is also a contract manufacturer for many well-known guitar brands, like Gibson, Fender, Ibanez, and others, producing budget-priced guitars for the global market. The work was carried out in sweatshop conditions - and when the workers organized a union, the company shut down their Korea factories, offshoring manufacturing work to Indonesian and Chinese factories owned by Cort.

In Los Angeles, they gained the support of world famous guitarist Tom Morello, as well as rapper/activist Boots Riley, MC5's Wayne Kramer, SOAD's Serj Tankian, local Asian American artists Skim, Shin Kawasaki, David Tran, and other artists. The workers also got labor solidarity from United Steelworkers 675, the Korean Metalworkers Union, individuals from LA and OC unions. They also achived meetings with representatives from Gibson and Fender guitar companies.

The Indypendent Issue 145: Prophet and Loss: Obama's First Year

January 20, 2010 marks one full year since President Barack Obama made history and became the first African-American ever to reside in the White House. He came into office riding a wave of hope and change, promising to transform Washington.

But disappointment and disillusion have set in among progressives and the left. President Obama has escalated the war in Afghanistan, his health care plan is a big giveaway to insurance companies, the United States remains in Iraq, and the economy is still in tatters.

Indypendent writers Stanley Aronowitz, Arun Gupta and Nicholas Powers examine Obama’s first year in office.

Aronowitz writes, “For many who voted for Obama, 2009 has been a year of deep disillusionment. The degree to which the Obama administration revealed its basic war and big business orientation was first shown by his major cabinet and staff appointees. Robert Gates, Bush’s defense secretary, was retained; Hillary Clinton, perhaps the Senate’s leading hawk, became secretary of state; the crucial position of treasury secretary went to a Federal Reserve bureaucrat and Wall Street ally, Tim Geithner; and Lawrence Summers, Bill Clinton’s last Treasury head, became Obama’s chief economic advisor.

What was obscured by Obama’s rousing campaign and nimble rhetoric has become brutally apparent in the aftermath. The Democratic Party has, since the end of World War II, been the favored party of finance capital. That mantle once belonged to the Republicans — the fabled party of the rich and wealthy. But the GOP has sunk into a right-wing party of opposition and no longer pretends to be a party of government. Its cast, begun as far back as the Goldwater takeover in 1964, is anti-internationalist, narrowly ideological and administratively incompetent. Meanwhile, the Democrats live a glaring contradiction: on the one hand, they rely on labor and the new social movements of feminism, ecology and black freedom both for votes and for a large portion of their political cadres. On the other, they need hundreds of millions of dollars to oil the party apparatus and run 535 national election campaigns. Aside from the unions, most of this money comes from corporate sponsors and wealthy individuals.”

Planned Parenthood moving to a new bigger facility got churches across the country to ship thousands of folks here to Houston on Martin Luther King day to protest abortion and womens access to safe and affordable health services. Pro-Choice and feminist groups were able to mobilize a small number of folks (honestly, at around 30 this is bigger than many Houston protests) but it was dwarfed by the thousands of carpetbaggers who came to protest Planned Parenthood.

CUCPJ Delivers Petition With More Than 400 signatures, But Rietz Refuses To Drop Charges On Jeshaun

On Tuesday morning, Jan. 19, Champaign-Urbana Citizens for Peace and Justice delivered an online petition with 377 signatures to State’s Attorney Julia Rietz asking her to drop the charges on Jeshaun Manning-Carter, the 15 year old who was with Kiwane Carrington when he was killed by Champaign police. A hard copy of the petition with another 60 signatures was also presented. Jeshaun is being prosecuting on felony charges of resisting arrest.

A juvenile hearing was held at 2 p.m. with about 15-20 supporters showing up at the Champaign County Courthouse, although they were not permitted in the courtroom as is routine in juvenile cases. State’s Attorney Rietz appeared in court and local African American attorney Alfred Ivy represented the defendant. Attorney Ivy asked Judge Heidi Ladd for a continuance, saying that he and the State’s Attorney were working toward a resolution. Rietz had no objection, stating that according to Principal Richard Kelly of the READY Program where Jeshaun goes to school, he was attending class and doing well. Yet despite this good record, Rietz was still willing to drop the charges. Read More

Rainforest Action Network Targets General Mills, Cargill Over Palm Oil

Minnesota-based General Mills' brands--including Cheerios, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Nature Valley and Progresso--are some of the most trusted by mainstream America.  But around 100 of their products include palm oil or palm oil derivatives purchased from Cargill, the country's biggest private multinational.  That makes General Mills complicit in the rainforest destruction, land theft, and human rights violations brought about by palm oil production.

On Tuesday morning, 42 Twin Cities activists and the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) paid General Mills a visit at their Golden Valley headquarters, unfurling a seventy by thirty foot banner reading "Warning! General Mills Destroys Rainforests."  They held the banner over a frozen pond for about half an hour, while a helicopter circled overhead taking aerial photos.  After getting the photos, they left with no trouble from security.

Tax Fairness Protest @ US Bank in Ashland, OR

January 19, 2010- Oregonians marched on US Bank in Ashland to protest the bank's disrespect for its unemployed customers. For the bank its nothing but greedy profit that drives its huge contributions to the NO on Measures 66 & 67 campaign. At the same time they spend big bucks to defeat these measures the US Bank gets money and unemployed customers because it has a contract with the State of Oregon to automatically receive unemployment compensation bucks from people who have been laid off from work. The bank actually stands to gain as unemployed ranks swell.

Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice organized this action. Protesters included 42 WRAP travelers mainly from Portland on their way to San Francisco for a west coast convergence calling attention to the national travesty of homelessness. Most of the travelers are without homes or jobs so the protest at the bank has direct implications for them. The WRAP travelers were joined by Southern Oregonians and the crowd of over 60 presented over 1000 names on a petition calling on US Bank to stop abusing its unemployed customers. Passing measures 66 and 67 will help the most effected in this recession.

The demonstration took place during a wind and rain storm. Protesters chanted loudly: "We got sold out. Banks got bailed out." A bank manager refused to accept the petitions so they were taped to the teller window.

Chicago MLK Day Commemorated with Public Workers' March for Social Services

The final three years of the life of Rev. Martin Luther King were increasingly devoted to economic justice issues, and it was in that spirit that the newly-formed Public Workers Unite coalition organized a march in protest, at which some 200 rallied and marched through downtown Chicago.

Much like Reverend King, who was fighting on behalf of public servers workers during his final days, Public Workers Unite rallied against a series of planned cutbacks and layoffs in public services — public transit, education, and other local services — and targeted corporate welfare (rallying at the Chicago headquarters of Boeing) which by contrast is on the increase.

Free Mumia! Los Angeles Rejects High Court's Ruling

LOS ANGELES, Wednesday, January 20, 2010 - Despite heavy rain, a group of about 30 people attended a demonstration for the freedom of political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. The last-minute action was organized by anti-racist activists who were reacting to the overturning of a judgment that favored the condemned journalist.

The Third Circuit Court of Appeals had overturned Abu-Jamal's death sentence, finding that the judge in the case had failed to properly instruct members of the jury to consider possible mitigating circumstances during sentencing. However, the Supreme Court overturned the lower court's decision, opening up the possibility that Abu-Jamal, who has always maintained his innocence, could return to death row. 42 arrested in Guantanamo Bay protest-14 inside US Capitol

On Jan 21, 42 people were arrested for protesting the continued existence of the notorious Guantanamo Bay detention camp, exactly one year after President Obama promised to close it within one year.

Those arrested on the Capitol steps held banners reading "Broken Promises, Broken Laws, Broken Lives." Inside the Capitol, 14 activists performed a "memorial service" for the three men whose deaths at Guantanamo in 2006 were initially reported as suicides and callously described as "acts of asymmetrical warfare" by military officials. New reports provide strong evidence that the men may have been tortured to death at a CIA secret prison in Guantanamo.

Emergency Vigil in Support of Haiti

Despite the heavy rain, 24 people took part in an emergency vigil for Haiti at the Downtown Federal Building, Thursday eve, Jan 21. The vigil's purpose was asking people "to donate money to go to grassroots women and their families, and therefore communities, rather than to thieving elites and their corrupt NGOs." One very dedicated participant had been waiting for us since noon when the weekly vigil for Haiti usually takes place.

Signs said “Haiti – Help Not Occupation. Return Aristide,” and asked people to question “Where is the Red Cross?” and to consider supporting earthquake victims through HaitiAction.net. Many signs simply called for humanitarian aid to take precedence over a U.S. Military presence. Others condemned the ongoing occupations in both Haiti and Honduras.

It was reported that other emergency vigils for Haiti were being held around the world including ones also organized by the Global Women’s Strike in London and in Philadelphia protesting that survivors are dying as the US military blocks food, water and medical supplies from getting through, and calling on the US to prioritize getting help to grassroots communities. And Haiti Action Committee has called a vigil in San Francisco on Monday, January 25.

Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign continues efforts with direct action, town hall, galvanized campaigns

The Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign has vigorously continued its efforts to support lower-income Chicagoans who are fighting unjust evictions. In a recent video, Chicagoan Lenise Forrest and her family were evicted in thirteen-degree weater after her house was broken into. While Forrest was negotiating getting her belongings, a man was shot nearby.

On Thursday, January 14th, the Campaign held a town hall at Park Community Church near Cabrini Green to launch a series of townhalls to build momentum for the campaign and related campaigns. Among the campaigns in play: helping prevent homelessness among about 50 families in Cabrini Green, and taking on a corrupt slumlord in Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood.

quality emergency care in situations pertinent to activists. We will train you in giving a basic assessment, in offering friends and allies life saving first aid, discuss strategies for dealing with police weapons and violence, and many other awesome things.

This training will be the weekend of January 29-31, 5pm-9pm on Friday and 9am-6pm on both Saturday and Sunday. We ask for a $20 donation to cover the cost of materials, supplies, and travel, but no-one is turned away for lack of funds. Our priority is to get as many people trained as possible, and we will prioritize anyone planning on providing medical support at the Olympics. Please let us know if there's anything we can do to make this training accessible for you.

Haiti Quake Survivor: "I am still very traumatized from seeing that many dead bodies." Stories from Haiti.

Sister Mawiyah was in Haiti when the earthquake hit on January 12. She has been doing missionary work there for the last 23 years and made it her home for the last five years. The name of her organization is Haitian American Ministries. Bro. Kofi had been notifying us that she was missing during the earthquake and was not responding. But around 2:00am on the morning of January 14, he received a text message from her that confirmed she was alive in the midst of thousands being found dead.

"Inside the cyber cafe, everything was fine. But once we stepped outside, it was chaos," said Sis. Mawiyah. "Concrete buildings had fallen. There was rubble all over. Where can you run in the middle of an earthquake? So everyone ended up standing in the middle of the street. And even as I'm sitting here talking to you, it seems so surreal. When it first happened I was in shock like everyone else. But the tremors continued. Even until the day I left on Saturday, tremors were still occurring," she said in a slurred tone. She described an unforgettable image of a woman running down a mountain covered in blood and dust and yelling that her home had collapsed and her baby girl was still trapped. "That was within five minutes of the earthquake," said Sis. Mawiyah. [Full article with photos]

The Democrats’ claim to be “shocked,” but this scenario is now too familiar in the U.S. two-party system — that corporate-owned game of political musical chairs. Just when it seemed that the Democrats could finally “do something” — since they had a year of super-majority status in the Senate — a wrench was somehow thrown in the machinery.

What’s rotten about education?

Budget shortfalls, student ratios, and teachers' contract disputes hamper institutions' ability to educate students
Let's just say it: education is pretty messed up right now.
Oregon taxpayers now spend roughly the same amount of money to incarcerate 13,401 inmates as they do to educate 438,000 university and community college students. But spending on prisons is growing at a faster rate than education and other state services.

Houston's New Mayor Police Chief Search Will Set Tone for City's Immigration Policy

Flying below the radar during Houston’s low-key mayoral race was an undercurrent of anger toward immigrants. Right now the loudest voices are winning, and they are not voices of understanding or mercy, but of anger and division.

Leading the charge in linking immigrants as a scourge on Houston is Gary Blankinship (pictured), president of the Houston Police Officers Union. Following the shooting of Houston police officer Rick Salter in March 2009, Blankinship openly criticized Chief Hurtt and then Mayor Bill White for defending the City of Houston “sanctuary city” policy, a policy that does not allow officers to question the citizenship status of any person (General Order No. 500-5). The Late, Great Howard Zinn

Howard Zinn was above all a gentleman of unflagging grace, humility and compassion. No American historian has left a more lasting positive legacy on our understanding of the true nature of our county, mainly because his books reflect a soul possessed of limitless depth. Howard’s PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES will not be surpassed. As time goes on new chapters will be written in its spirit to extend its reach. But his timeless masterpiece broke astonishing new ground both in its point of view and its comprehensive nature. The very idea of presenting the American story from the point of view of the common citizen was itself revolutionary. That he pulled it off with such apparent ease and readability borders on the miraculous. That at least a million Americans have bought and read it means that its on-going influence is immense. It is truly a history book that has and will continue to change history for the better.

Searching for the Significance of a Life and a Death

Yesterday, a man set himself on fire outside Ungar Furs, and burned himself to death. We know his name now: According to the Alliance, it was Daniel Shaull. And we know that what he did appears to have been in solidarity with the animals who continue to die horrible deaths, day after day after day, to keep Nicholas Ungar in business. We know that, even as he was on fire and undoubtedly in terrible pain, he mustered great strength and tried to go inside the fur store to spread the flames to the coats and garments and blood-stained profits of the last fur store in Portland.

Howard Zinn, Presente!

With great sorrow, we mark the death of one of anarchism’s most thoughtful and productive minds, but it is with great joy that we celebrate his contributions to the movement for true justice and freedom. We share our joy for what he has given us with his actions and words, here in Boston and across the world. Far from being a lofty academic, before his professorship and writing career he was a dock worker from Brooklyn who went on to fight in WWII, earning his degree afterward on the GI Bill. The following is a statement from members of the Sacco and Vanzetti Commemoration Society:

L.A. Judge Rules Animal Liberation Front Not a Gang

On January 26th, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David S. Wesley ruled that the Animal Liberation Front is not a "gang." The government had tried to find two animal rights protestors guilty of being "gang members." Judge Wesley stated that the prosecution's expert Lt. Butte had "misled the grand jury. The ALF does not meet the legal requirements to be considered a gang. Their primary goal is to save animals, not commit crimes." That charge was dismissed though other charges remain.

State of Emergency: Ice Storms Knock Out Indigenous Infrastructure in South Dakota

It has been a devastating winter for weather-related disasters. While there has been a lot of information about (and vital response to) the situation in Haiti, there's another emergency closer to home, one which calls for solidarity with the indigenous people of South Dakota and surrounding areas.

The past weekend's ice storms brought down 2,000 to 3,000 utility poles on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota, knocking out an already shaky resource infrastructure.  Crews are working feverishly, but electricity may be out for up to 30 days in some areas. With no electricity, no heat, no running water, and a wind chill below zero the situation is growing more difficult. The bulk of those most affected by the storm are located on reservations in Pine Ridge, Standing Rock, Eagle Butte and others. This is an urgent state of emergency. Read more & donation information

AR Folks PLEASE Chill Out

I know death is a scary and upsetting subject for most people. Emotions run high and people get confused about things. Especially under such strange and disturbing circumstances as the recent self immolation.
But in your search for meaning in this please be careful with your allies and comrades feelings. We're receiving a high volume of complaints from people who've had their feelings hurt and are expressing frustration with open publishing. Even worse than that, people are complaining that they are feeling discouraged from being a part of the struggle for animal rights (on all sides of the opinion spectrum on this issue).

Hey, James O'Keefe -- About That White Racist Forum You Attended in 2006...

Interesting what could have been - or not have been - had we caught this four years ago. Back then, there was this white supremacist forum that we had called attention to and eventually attended that featured American Renaissance's Jared Taylor and National Review's homophobe extraordinaire John Derbyshire. It was originally supposed to be held at the building of the conservative activist organization Leadership Institute until it was forced to move to another location. This was where we met Marcus Epstein, and readers to this website knows how that relationship has blossomed into a rather comical one, to say the least. There was also a photographer there, and lo and behold this picture has surfaced of a now familiar face attending the forum - James O'Keefe. That's right, before the ACORN videos he produced, before the arrest for interfering with a Senator's phone lines, and just a few months after he graduated from Rutgers to work for the Leadership Institute, O'Keefe was manning a table at a forum of suit-and-tie Nazis. O'Keefe became dead letter to conservatives the moment the cuffs were slapped on him last week, but if he ever shows up again in respectable company, we hope he has explained this little outing before he pulls any more race-based stunts.

LA Anarchist Book Fair Panelist, Ojore Lutalo, Arrested

Ojore Lutalo, (Black Liberation activist) was pulled off an Amtrak train in La Junta, Colorado on his way home to New Jersey this past Tuesday. He was arrested and charged with, “Interfering with Public Transportation”. Train passengers alleged that Ojore had made “terroristic, [sic] threats against the train”.

Ojore has denied the charges, saying that he was having a conversation with a friend on the phone at the time. Ojore has been released and is out on $30,000 bail. He is currently staying with friends in Denver. Those who wish to help should contact Denver ABC for information.

As DeMuth's Trial Date Nears, Federal Prosecutor on Crusade Against Anarchist Ideology

U.S. Attorney Clifford R. Cronk III is using his office’s investigation of a 2004 animal rights-related break-in at the University of Iowa to harass and punish targets whom he claims identify as anarchists, a political ideology dating back to the early 19th Century. To date, neither his superiors in the Department of Justice, nor the federal courts, have done anything to curtail his abuse of power. In behavior reminiscent of the darkest days of the McCarthy witch hunts, Cronk argues in court documents that anarchists are domestic terrorists who should be locked up for posing a threat to civil society based on nothing but the prosecutor’s unfounded political bias.

In the latest updates from the Davenport, Iowa grand jury cases that Cronk used as a springboard, a judge denied Scott DeMuth's motion to extend his upcoming "animal enterprise terrorism" trial date of March 1, even though he has not yet received any discovery from the government.  A new motion to extend the date will be filed; meanwhile DeMuth is still slated for a pretrial hearing on February 8.  Carrie Feldman, meanwhile, is still in Washington County, Iowa jail, despite a host of legal issues that should set her free.  Her recent appeal for release was denied 2-1, with the majority judges citing secret evidence.

On January 18th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, around 30 people gathered in the freezing cold on the Boston Common to demand that President Obama follow through on his promise to close down Guantanamo Bay Prison. The President had vowed to close Guantanamo Bay—located on a US Naval Base in Cuba where hundreds of accused "terrorists" are detained, many without charges or access to lawyers—within his first year, which ended on January 20th. The President, along with human rights organizations, have condemned Guantanamo for the use of torture and countless other violations of international human rights agreements.
