BOYCOTT COCA-COLA and DELTA AIR LINES

To be honest, no court ever produced a good reason for executing Troy Davis for a murder he never committed. Yet, Troy always had trouble persuading the courts to do right in his case. Therefore, we hope for economic pressure that might result in a new trial. The Coca-Cola Company and Delta Air Lines, Inc., two multinational corporations, conduct their businesses from headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.

Egyptian Government And Other Arab Leaders Seen As Complicit In Gaza Assault

As of January 2nd, the Palestinian death toll in Gaza is 428 and is growing as bombs continue to fall. Even while large protests erupt on the streets of cities across the Middle East, many see Egypt and other US backed dictatorships in the region as complicit in the Israeli campaign. For instance, when Israel started its latest bombing campaign the Egyptian government was quick to blame Hamas and violently assault Egyptian protesters against Israel's actions.

No LNG in Oregon, Yes to Clean Energy!

Several coastal locations in Oregon are proposed sites for highly explosive liquified natural gas (LNG) terminals, to be brought in to port via large tankers from overseas locations. In addition to legitimate concerns about dredging being destructive to the riparian estuary ecosystems, the highly explosive properties of supercooled natural gas present risks in known seismic areas of the Cascadian subduction zone. Holding placards appealing for peace and a large banner listing the number of Palestinian and Israeli dead, fifty-five Worcester area residents demonstrated Friday January 2,outside the office of US Representative Jim McGovern to protest the Israeli assault on Gaza. The hour-long demonstration, which began at noon, included a procession to Worcester's City Hall where activists distributed a leaflet(see below) calling for an end to the siege on the Palestinian territory. Organized locally by the Central Massachusetts Coalition for Middle East Peace and the SS. Francis and Therese Catholic Worker, the Worcester demonstration was part of a national initiative coordinated by the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation. Ungar Fur demo wrap up 1/2/09

This weekly demo turned out to be a crowd favorite. throughout the day the activists count was around an average of ten. it was a cold snowy morning, but within the first hour the sun started to peak though to give us some sunshine.

each activist was holding an anti fur sign with images showing the horrors of the fur industry, a couple activists were busy handing our literature and talking with anyone walking by that happened to have any questions about why we were out there. some disgusted passerby's even ended up walking into Ungars to let them know what they think about the fur industry.

Friday's Gaza Protest Rally is Huge Success!

GAZA, GAZA, PLEASE DON'T CRY, PALESTINE WILL NEVER DIE!!

There were well over 1,000 people in attendance throughout the entire rally in support of the Palestinian people in Gaza today, which was significantly more than the first emergency protest in support of Gaza on Dec. 29, where approximately 300 people showed up. People came in buses, vans, etc. after Friday congregation prayers from local Mosques. There were even contingents from Buffalo and New York City.

This was really a good turnout considering the time frame in contacting members of the local Arab and Muslim community in Cleveland. Supporters from all walks of life were present and lively as well! Alison Weir, from If Americans Knew (ifamericansknew.com) was guest speaker along with others from the Cleveland area. There was a minister from a church, and an eloquent Muslim speaker from the African-American community.

Gaza Solidarity in Rochester and Western, NY

This week saw Rochester mobilize twice to denounce the ongoing massacre happening against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. On Tuesday, December 30th around 70 people came out for a national day of action against Israeli state violence in front of the federal building in Downtown. On Friday, January 2, some 200+ people came out again for a vigil to mourn the loss of life in Gaza which was called for by the Islamic community of Rochester. The vigil started at the federal building but moved and congregated at State and Main.

But it wasn't just Rochester that came out on December 30th. According to Zeyad Saeed's account and Workers World Party, Buffalo, NY had a terrific turnout with some 200 people, mostly Palestinian, some Yemeni and other Arab youth; a spirited group of 30 were out in Ithaca, NY, according to Tompkins County Against War and Occupation, and just northeast of Ithaca, Syracuse, NY had near 100 people, according to Richard Vallejo's account of the Syracuse action.

Reports on the two Free Gaza protests: Tuesday and Friday

friday [Jan 2 2009]: Portland holds second protest demanding justice in Gaza... Around 200 people braved the cold and sleet on Friday afternoon in Portland to voice their opposition to the Israeli attacks in Gaza, and to call on Senator Ron Wyden to change his position on the issue from unquestioning support for Israel to a position that supports equal rights for the Palestinian people. Many held hand-stenciled signs reading "Gaza Genocide: Made in USA", and "Free Palestine". The group made their way around the downtown Portland park in front of the Federal Building, chanting "Free Free Palestine" and "Occupation is a crime". Motorists passing in front of the protest honking and cheering, and pedestrians on the street also voiced their support. [full story]

Tuesday afternoon [Dec 30, 2008]: "Occupation is a crime, killing children is a crime" - was the chant that filled the downtown streets of Portland, Oregon - USA, Tuesday afternoon, as hundreds of local residents gathered with handmade signs and megaphones to voice their outrage at the Israeli airstrikes on Gaza that have continued for the last four days. Mazin Malik, a Palestinian-American who has lived in the Portland area for decades, attended the protest Tuesday. He told IMEMC reporters, "People in Portland should pressure their representatives to use the financial leverage of the US government to reach parameters to forge a true peace." An estimated 500 people attended the Portland protest, which was just one of dozens held worldwide on Tuesday, in solidarity with the besieged population of Gaza. IMEMC's Saed Bannoura, who was shot and paralyzed by the Israeli army in 1991, also spoke at the rally, condemned the ongoing Israeli offensive against the residents in the Gaza Strip, and called for rejecting the US policies and its blindfolded military and financial support to Israel. Semantics of a Massacre

Common knowledge has come to regard black as white in the "Israeli-Palestinian" conflict. This article is attempting to set the record straight when it comes to the fundamental truths and the political context of the controversy. Israel has invaded and is currently an occupation force in Palestine, Palestinians have a right to armed resistance and what is happening now in Gaza is not war, but pure massacre. Last week, 100-200 protesters demonstrated outside Senator Amy Klobuchar's Minneapolis office, despite near blizzard-like conditions, then went inside and occupied her office until Klobuchar returned to meet with them. Denverites Protest Israel's Bombardment and Invasion of Gaza

(originally published on laughingfish.blogspot.com)

... On January 3rd, for the second time in less than a week, Denverites of conscience added their voices and their solidarity to the wave of worldwide protest which erupted in response to Israel's recent escalation of aggression. Approximately 70 people assembled in front of the state capital from 2 to 4pm to make their voices heard. The crowd was about 60 percent persons of middle eastern and Palestinian descent, with the rest being made up by members of Denver's progressive and activist community. The political composition of the crowd was quite diverse. It seems every shade of ideological perspective, organization, and non organization was represented, from anarchist vegetarians, to liberals and pacifists holding UN flags, to toddlers barely young enough to walk unassisted and everything in between. Clearly the sign of a healthy and a broad movement, albeit of rather modest size... read more

Tennessee Coal Ash Disaster

When will people learn that coal can never be clean? From extraction to disposal, it is one of the most environmentally devastating energy sources in existence. On December 22, 2008, the residents of Roane County, TN received an early Christmas gift from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). It seems they were quite naughty this past year. However, instead of the simple lump of coal I always dreaded as a child, they got a coal ash slurry. An estimated 400 acres of it.

The nearby Kingston Fossil Plant had been storing coal ash, the solid byproduct of burning coal, since it began operating in 1955. According to the TVA website, the plant burns 14,000 tons of coal a day. That's a total of 271 millions tons of coal. All of the ash from all of that coal is mixed with water and stored in an above ground reservoir. On the Monday before Christmas, one of the 20ft earthen retaining walls encasing the dump site failed sending forth a gray tidal wave removing houses from their foundations and covering over 400 acres in a toxic quagmire. Volume estimates range from 350 to over 500 million gallons. But that is just the beginning.

There are roughly 600 coal fired power plants in the US alone. Clean Energy Rally in Salem Tuesday Jan 13th

Bergin Arraignment TODAY at 1:30

According to Judge Mauer's staff, Bergin's arraignment is scheduled for TUESDAY, January 6th, at 1:30pm. As always, you are advised to call the courthouse in the morning, to confirm the date and time, and these are subject to change (as most of you know).

Notorious murder-cop William Bergin is to be arraigned (again) at the Clackamas County Courthouse in Oregon City tomorrow. As you will likely recall, Bergin and his accomplice Deputy Dave Willard gunned down an unarmed, injured accident victim because they were scared that he might get blood on them. He's not being arraigned for that, alas, but he is being arraigned for official misconduct, theft, and whatever else. It might be fun to be there.... If you would like to interview Mr. Bergin for a story, you should have reporters stationed outside each exit. You should come early, and be willing to stay late. Because last time, Bergin sneaked into the courthouse early, through the back door, to avoid having to face the public. After the arraignment was interrupted by lawyers for the man he murdered, who were there to ask that Bergin's lawyer recuse himself due to a conflict of interest, Bergin literally ran out the back door and fled from anyone who might want real justice, or who might have any tricky questions for him.

And let this be a lesson to Mr. Bergin and all cops who would kill people just for fun: The system might let you off every time, but you will have to live with your conscience, your fear, your own knowledge, and the judgment of the public for the rest of your life.

In any event, it promises to be some fun. See you there.

BART Police Shoot and Kill Man at Fruitvale BART Station

UPDATE: January 7th, 2009: Rally and Rage Over BART Police Murder of Oscar Grant

In the early hours of January 1st, BART police shot and killed a 22 year old man, Oscar Grant, on the platform of the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland. Witnesses report that Grant was "lying on his stomach with his hands out in a non-threatening position when he was shot". Police have confirmed Grant was unarmed and have suggested the shooting was an accident. Grant lived in Hayward and leaves behind a 4-year-old daughter.

BART officials have not released the name of the officer who shot Grant. After the shooting, BART police seized several cell phones from people on the platform who said they had used the phones' cameras to record what happened. For the first two days BART officials told the mainstream media that surveillance cameras at the station do not record, but then corrected themselves Friday night saying the cameras did record but didn't show the incident.

There will be a rally to protest the shooting from 3pm till 8pm on Wednesday January 7th at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland.

Austin RNC Informant Brandon Darby is Provocateur Not Hero

News of Brandon Darby's role as an FBI informant has caused a tempest of responses from the activist community, news coverage from a variety of sources and a response from the right-wing blogosphere lionizing Darby as a hero. The Austin Informant working group has release the statement immediately below, followed by links to other coverage of this story.

A group of Austin activists today released their conclusions from reviewing over 70 pages of FBI documents obtained through a legal case regarding alleged actions to protest the Republican National Convention (RNC). From reading the documents, and from their own experience with him, these activists have concluded that the FBI informant Brandon Darby did not heroically intervene to stop violence. Rather it appears that he actively sought out people that he could manipulate and entrap. The two Texas men that Darby was most closely associated with during the convention, Bradley Crowder and David McKay, are accused of making Molotov cocktails and have been in jail since early September. Their trial is set for January 26. The disclosure of Brandon Darby as the informant casts further doubt on the charges against these two men.

According to the FBI's documents, Darby, posing as an activist, had been covertly gathering information for the FBI since at least February 2007, twelve months before he ever met Crowder or McKay or knew of any plans for the RNC. "As an older seasoned activist, Darby had a lot of sway over Crowder and McKay, making them susceptible to his often militant rhetoric," said Gabby Hicks, who was in St. Paul with Darby during the Convention. "He was always the one to suggest violence, when the rest of us clearly disagreed with those strategies." [read full article]

Bergin arraignment report back

I attended the arraignment for William Bergin this afternoon. The court room of Judge Jeffrey S. Jones was crowded this afternoon. Many cases had been re-scheduled because of the weather over the past few weeks, so the docket was full. William Bergin entered the room with his attorney Des Connell and they chatted about driving in the snow while we waited for the judge to enter. Channel 12 news was present and allowed to have a better view of the proceedings than those of us seated in the back of the room... The outcome of that process is yet to be determined.

Comment: Well, after convincing the District Attorney's Office that the public is entitled to know the name of the Deputy who is handling the arraignment (not an easy task), it was learned that Deputy District Attorney Michael Regan (503 655 8431) was charged with seeking "justice" in the matter of Mr. Bergin...Stay tuned.

Political Prisoner Hugo Pinell To Have Parole Hearing on January 17

In a new interview, San Francisco journalist and former Black Panther Kiilu Nyasha writes that San Quentin Six prisoner "Hugo L. A. Pinell, nicknamed 'Yogi Bear,' will go to Board again on January 17, 2009. His last Board appearance was November 14, 2006 when he was denied two years, despite having no rule infractions for 24 years. Make that nearly 27 years clean time now. One of George Jackson's closest comrades, Yogi has now been incarcerated in California prisons for almost 45 years, nearly 39 in solitary confinement, the last 19 in the Pelican Bay SHU (Security Housing Unit, or 24/7 lockup). The fact that he is still in great physical shape and hasn't lost his mind under such prolonged, tortuous conditions is testimony to his amazing spiritual and physical strength. Please write a letter to the Parole Board in support of Yogi's release -- at least to a mainline facility near San Francisco so his mother, 85, and other family/friends can have contact visits, and he can see the sun again."

Brandon Darby Roundup and Commentary: Snitch for FBI Is Roundly Denounced

The exposure of long-time activist Brandon Darby as an FBI Informant for almost two years leading up to the RNC has sparked outrage and sadness amongst communities both in Minnesota and Texas. The Austin Informant Working Group released a second statement on Darby yesterday, titled "Darby is Provocateur, Not Hero," in response to often pro-FBI (or, following historical precedent of informant cases, FBI-handled) portrayals of Darby in the media. Also yesterday, Democracy Now! featured the story and interviewed Common Ground co-founder Malik Rahim, who said, "I couldn't read the whole letter [from Darby] ... every time I do, it breaks me down into tears."

The "Texas 2" trial of Bradley Crowder and David McKay on weapons charges is set to begin at the federal courthouse in Minneapolis on Monday, January 26th. Many who have spoken with the accused - both still imprisoned in the Sherburne County facility where federal arrestees are held - believe McKay is cooperating with the government while Crowder is not. Both are inexperienced activists whom FBI documents show were pressured by Darby to escalate their actions, according to the Austin working group. Also on the 26th, the RNC 8 will be in court for a motion hearing and the trial of Darryl Robinson, beaten unconscious by police while copwatching last July and later charged with assault himself, is set to begin.

Writes Michelle Gross of CUAPB, "In a statement written to justify his activities as an FBI informant Brandon Darby opined, "It is very dangerous when a few individuals engage in or act on a belief system in which they feel they know the real truth and that all others are ignorant and therefore have no right to meet and express their political views." Yet this is the exact activity in which Darby engaged. Through his actions, Darby helped to create a narrative by police that activists/protesters are dangerous. That narrative allowed police to justify obscene expenditures on weaponry, touched off pre-emptive raids and detentions of people who had committed no crimes, and unleashed vicious assaults on people attempting to exercise our First Amendment rights during the RNC." (commentary continued below)

Rally and Rage Over BART Police Murder of Oscar Grant

On January 7th, a rally was held to protest the police murder of Oscar Grant. Protesters gathered at the Fruitvale BART station at 3pm. After dozens of speakers addressed the crowd for about 2 hours, a march began. Hundreds of protesters marched up International Blvd towards downtown Oakland. As the crowd passed the Lake Merritt BART area, there was a brief confrontation where a police car was attacked and a dumpster lit on fire. Within minutes, riot police arrived and shot tear gas into the crowd. The protest continued into the night as dozens of protesters massed and split up repeatedly, smashing windows, lighting fires in dumpsters, and torching at least two cars as police struggled to keep up. Oakland police are reporting that they arrested 105 people for a variety of offenses. Support for arrestees still being detained has been called for Friday, January 9th.

Wilsonville-based company "FLIR" puts all of Gaza in its crosshairs

Look closely at the footage the Israelis are releasing of their bommbings of Gaza. You can clearly see the "FLIR" label on some of them. This company cannot hide their involvement. They need to get out of the government contracting business and stick to explicitly selling their technology for civilian uses, or they need to be shut down!

If you were watching Democracy Now today, during the music break before the UNRWA representative Christopher Gunness spoke you may have been watching the "precision" bomb-dropping footage in horror already. But look closer, it gets worse. The FLIR watermark is there for all to see. This is a global company that makes "precision targeting systems" for sale to "friendly" militaries like Israel, and their GLOBAL HEADQUARTERS is based just south of Portland.

The show comes out of New York City and is hosted by Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez.

From the station's announcement:

Bostonians Arrested Demanding End to US-Funded Israeli War Crimes in Gaza

A diverse group of 30 Palestinian-Americans, Jewish Americans and supporters dramatized the US funded Israeli war crimes in Gaza with a "die-in" at the Israeli Consulate at 20 Park Plaza in Boston, MA. Demonstrators carried poster-sized images of the recent carnage in Gaza and read the names of the over 700 Palestinian dead as a result of US-funded Israeli aggression. Susan Barney, Rick Colbath-Hess, Ridgely Fuller, and Patrick Keaney, were arrested when they refused to leave the lobby of the consulate building, until Israel agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and to end its 18-month blockade on Gaza, which has prevented Palestinians from having food, medicine and electricity. anarchists attack east bay police station

Last night at 3:00 a.m. we attacked the police station across the street from Ashby BART. All of its front windows were smashed out with bricks. If the pigs think they can keep getting away with murder; they've got another thing coming. May this small action help to fuel the fires of the uprising spawned by the most recent murder at the hands of the armed thugs of capital.

On January 1st, 22 year old Oscar Grant was executed by Officer Johannes Mehserle of the BART police in plain view of a number of people while he was laying face down on the ground with his hands behind his back and reportedly handcuffed. Had his death not been captured on film and viewed by millions of people, this would undoubtedly be covered up and justified like the countless others murdered by the pigs in this country every year. Unfortunately for officer Mehserle, this cold blooded execution inspired hundreds of people to fight back against the pigs and the fucked up system they attempt to protect.

EMERGENCY RALLY AND SPEAK OUT against police brutality

In the early hours of New Year's Day, 2009, BART police officers responded to a call that fights were breaking out on the trains. After gaining control of the situation, a number of African American men were detained, and cuffed.

Oscar Grant, age 22, was one of these men. Video footage has surfaced of what happened next: Two officers hold Grant face-down with his hands behind his back and a third reaches into his holster, draws his gun, and shoots Grant in the back from point blank, and kills him. We all know that, historically, crimes such as these have ended with police officers getting off due to the lies and half-truths told by fellow officers, and a lack of witnesses to testify to the truth of the matter. That will not happen this time around.

JOIN US TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST HEINOUS POLICE BRUTALITY AND TO DEMAND JUSTICE.

Where: The Liberty Pole (East and Main St., Rochester, NY)

The protests for marriage rights that began following the passage of Proposition 8 in California continued this Saturday with a protest in the River Oaks neighborhood against the Defense of Marriage Act and for gay marriage rights. Impact Houston asked people to "make signs listing the different legal rights and responsibilities of marriage, none of which are available to same-sex couples here in Texas, following the passing of the constitutional ban on same-sex marriage that passed in 2005."

It took us a while to find the protest, as the 100 or so protesters had begun to march, we caught up with the protest and marched from around Woodhead to Shepherd, where protesters set up showing signs to traffic stretching from Shepherd to the River Oaks theater. Many folks honked, and I only noticed one negative response, a yuppie white dude who while walking from his car to a store gave us a thumbs down and a frown. [full report and photos]

Support Publicly Financed Elections

The city Auditor is resigning in May. This position is a powerful position that is in charge of auditing (or ignoring) city projects and runs the Independent Police Review. The powers that be want a special election held that is in 4 months. This is bad as most people who can qualify for auditor will be busy doing Taxes and not able to run. Also, this is not enough time for people to qualify for Public Financing. Which leaves an auditor who is elected by the PDC, business and the Portland Police Union. If you can please attend the following meeting and support Portland Publicly Financed Elections by asking that the election happen in September (this will give time for good progressive people to run for this office).

Police Shine Spotlight On Joe Anybody Camera

While filming under the bridge, the police attempt to block my view
(PS I was also informed a police sweep would be happening on Saturday night)
I went to see if the homeless people under the Burnside Bridge in Portland Oregon were getting hassled for being "homeless" I seen a man getting arrested so I started filming from 50 yards away. As I filmed one officer in a car started shining his spot light to block me from filming. What I don't like is I just won a tort claim against the city police for taking my camera and for ticketing me for "filming them" ... I won my case http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2008/12/383132.shtml ... I can film... anyone can film the police in public[.] I also won 100 bucks ... a small fee that I attached to say I want policy change not money. One month latter the police are trying to block me again. I don't like this nor think it is appropriate. In good faith I didn't sue them for big dollars ...and yet they still play their "cover up games" ... This begs the question just what "Are the Portland Police Trying to Hide?" This was filmed on 1.9.09. I was informed by people under the bridge that the police that arrested the man, said they would be back tomorrow 1.10.09 to "sweep the homeless" from under the bridge... Outpourings of support for Gaza continue in Houston

As Israel's attacks on Gaza continue, and civilian casualties continue to mount, outpourings of support continue for the people of Gaza in Houston and elsewhere. The Houston Coalition for Justice and Peace in Palestine hosted a candle light vigil on Thursday January 8th, and a benefit gala at the Hilton West Chase, where organizers report 100,000 dollars being raised for humanitarian efforts in Gaza. Palestine solidarity activists also came out on Saturday January 10th to counter a protest by Israel supporters at Postoak and Westheimer.

On Friday January 9th the Houston Indymedia Radio Show devoted our whole program to the conflict in Gaza [online here]. The show featured audio from local protests and an interview with 2 Palestinian American activists Hadeel of the Houston Palestine Film Festival and Sousan, who recently wrote Phoning Home to Gaza for Counterpunch:

My family was in Denver for the holidays when we awoke to peddling images of bombardment. Gaza was on fire. 250 people dead. From our television set we quickly tuned into the perversions of war, watching reports from both American and Arab media. We are safe. We do not smell burned flesh, hear cries of agony or see before us military planes. We view from a distance, but feel none of the anxiety and melancholy that the rest of our family feels in the besieged coastal strip. Scattered throughout the refugee camps of Khan Younis, Beit Lahya and Jabalya, my relatives are living through another war. We try to call each and every relative to ascertain their safety, but mostly to see whether or not they are still living. The telephone networks were either busy or not working at all. We forgot that Gaza only gets electricity for six hours a day. [Full article]

Houston Food Not Bombs Harassed by HPD

I arrived with a pot of hot food to find a bunch of HPD officers politely asking us to find a new place to serve, taking down ID information, and willing to threaten us if we didn't comply. Houston Food Not Bombs has been harassed by cops before and has been hassled by the library before. Last night, for the first time in a year and half, the Downtown Public Library (contact them at ContactHPL@cityofhouston.net) decided to ask us to go elsewhere, this time by sending out the HPD.

Supervisor Pribilski was not stating that any law was being broken, but spoke on behalf of the "Public" Library, that they would like us to go away. This type of NIMBY oppression of the rights of the homeless has been a constant theme for FNB, causing us to move several times over the years, until reaching our current location at the Downtown "Public" Library.

Several people there to eat were very supportive, thanking us for risking such confrontations to feed them. One said he hadn't eaten in three days. [full story]

For Second Week Gaza Demo in San Jose Halts Traffic & Shoppers

On Sunday, January 11, more than a thousand people demonstrated against Israeli attacks on Gaza in a suburban shopping district in San Jose, California. This was the second Sunday in a row that demonstrators, many dressed in the colors of the Palestinian flag, started their protest by chanting and wielding signs in front of a typical 1960's era shopping strip. They then stopped traffic as they filled the streets a block away in a fashion district featuring luxury retailers.

LOS ANGELES January 14, 2009 - Early this morning, Jewish activists in a historic first in Los Angeles, chained themselves to the entrance of the Israeli Consulate and blocked the driveway to the parking structure, blocking all traffic in and out of the building. LNG Opponents Will Challenge FERC Decision in Federal Court

Astoria, OR - Two days after staging a massive rally against LNG in Oregon, opponents of the Bradwood LNG terminal vowed to challenge FERC in federal court after the commission rejected their request for reconsideration of the terminal's approval.

Without discussion, the five-member commission dismissed challenges from the states of Oregon and Washington, as well as Columbia River Treaty Tribes and Columbia Riverkeeper.

Brett VandenHeuvel, executive director of Columbia Riverkeeper, blasted FERC's decision, "FERC's decision is clearly illegal and we will challenge it in federal court. Not only Riverkeeper and allies, but also the states of Oregon and Washington, and the Columbia River tribes all warned FERC that we would fight its illegal approval. I expect we will succeed on appeal."

Ungar Fur's Demo Wrap Up. 1/16/09

The demonstration started at 1 pm as always. The weather was on our side today, providing lots of sun and lots of people walking around SW portland. Throughout the day we had a lot of passing pedestrians stop and ask about why we were outside of Ungar Fur's (SW 12th and Yamhill). We would then give them literature about the fur industry and let them know about how many animals in the fur trade have their necks broken, have their skulls stomped on, and eventually, have their skin ripped off while they are still conscious and breathing. This disgusted the curious citizens of portland. Some of them even went in to tell Ungar Fur's what they thought about their business.

We are here to let the public know about how cruel and inhumane the fur industry is. we are also here to let Ungar Fur's know that we will never back down, until they stop the killing.

Zimbabwe's Future Under a New U.S. Administration?

Bob Herbert the African-American New York Times columnist has just published a column in the New York Times called "Zimbabwe" in which he claims that Zimbabwe it is in a total mess and that it's all the president of Zimbabwe's fault. The president of Zimbabwe is of course Robert Mugabe and he has been president from the very beginning of the creation of the state of Zimbabwe out of what was a very brief but successful political uprising of the overwhelming majority black population of Rhodesia against the colonial British white settlers who stole the country, controlled the economy and owned practically all the farmland.

Gaza Ghetto: Wednesday February 4th

Much of the mainstream discourse about the current conflict in Gaza portrays it as an eternal struggle between two groups fighting since biblical times. 'Gaza Ghetto' dispels this myth, examining the impact of displacement on the life of Abu el-Adel and his family through intimate scenes of daily life in Jabalia, the largest Palestinian refugee camp. The film follows them as they return to the site of their former village, now the site of a Jewish settlement inside Israel. As the grandfather and great-grandfather point out an orchard and sycamore fig that used to belong to their family, a Jewish resident emerges and orders them to leave, claiming they need a permit to be at the site. After spending this time with Abu el-Adel and his grandchildren you will understand how the roots of the Palestine-Israel conflict influence today's harsh realities and dreams of peace, justice and stability. 'Gaza Ghetto' is the first documentary film made in Gaza, and sadly all of the themes still seem as excruciatingly relevant 20 years later.

Olympia, WA: Torch Lit March Against Police

Upwards of 45 people gathered across the street from the celebration of the re-opening of the Timberland Library to discuss what to do about the recent murders committed by police and how we can better show solidarity with the rebels in Greece and Oakland. Those in the crowd looked around, reassured each other and then surged toward the police station, pelting it with stones and torches and then dispersed into the surrounding neighborhood.

3 people were arrested, 10 detained. One of the arrested was stopped with a loaded handgun pointing at his face. The 3 were later released on bail and had received misdemeanor charges. As for the people who ditched their bikes to get away, the police took them for "evidence" and they will most likely not be returned.

RNC Aftermath Roundup: Reports and Courts

Commission report: The Heffelfinger/Luger commission released its nonbinding report before the St. Paul City Council last Wednesday to jeers, derision and laughter from the audience. The commission consisted mostly of ex-police and politicians, all of whom had to agree on including an item in the report, thus silencing dissenting opinions even within the commission itself. The report, available here, claimed "violent anarchists" made police attacks justifiable, but also raised concerns about the September 4 mass arrest. Read: Top 9 Myths of the RNC by Friends of the RNC 8 | Intial Reactions by Nigel Parry

In the courts: Susan Gaertner's office levied three more felony charges last Friday; funds are urgently needed for two Milwaukee-area activists now jailed. | The trial of seven northeast activists arrested at 7th and Wall is expected to begin this Tuesday, January 20, and they've requested strong court solidarity. | Earlier this month, Judge Salvador Rosas recused himself from the RNC 8 case, leaving their January 26th court date canceled. | However, several other activists are in court on the 26th, including David McKay of the "Texas 2"; reportedly, FBI informant Brandon Darby is being flown to Minneapolis to testify.

The End of the Bush-Cheney Era: Real Change or False Hope?

As the final hours of the Bush-Cheney regime draw nearer millions around the world are breathing a collective sign of relief that they survived the Bush-Cheney era. The one word Obama campaign slogan: Hope, is still the operative word in the minds of the public. The crowds at 2009 inauguration are expected to break all records with perhaps over 3 million people lining the parade route. Not in recent history as a president entered the office with expectations so high.

Corporate media has transformed the event from an inauguration into a coronation. The pre-inaugural hype now resembles that of the Rose Parade or a Super Bowl game. The voices of alternative viewpoints lost in the spectacle of the parade and tournament. With the news that KPFK, a major local outlet of alternative news, has been denied access to broadcast facilities at the inauguration non-corporate representation of the event will be very limited.

Fortunately Indymedia activists are gearing up to cover counter-inaugural events. The DC-Indymedia web site has a redesigned homepage for special coverage. There are reporters from Urbana-Champaign IMC in DC now and filing reports. Also there is a live webcast at Radio Portland IMC. Locally here in Los Angeles there is a counter-inaugural event downtown planned for Tuesday.

John Mearsheimer: Israel's Real Purpose In Its Atrocities in Gaza

John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago, co-author of the paper (available online) and subsequent book (with Stephen Walt) _The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy_, presents a concise timeline description and absolutely the clearest account of the true reason behind Israel's wanton atrocities in Gaza.

Mearsheimer argues that diminishing Hamas or stopping their rockets are subsidiary goals for Israel, to Israel's more central goal of controlling all of historical Palestine via an "Iron Wall" policy that would permanently subjugate the Palestinian people and ensures Israeli control of all Palestinian land, air, water, borders/sea, and economy.

Mearsheimer points out that this goal cannot be achieved, and certainly not by the brutal method of a total war on the Palestinian people. The likely outcome even in the case of relative Israeli success is a permanent Apartheid, which itself will [thankfully] doom Israel as a chauvinistically and exclusionary "Jewish State" [and its racist state ideology of Zionism].

UCIMC reporting from DC on the Inauguration

Just before the November 2008 elections, a few people at the IMC started talking about a road trip to Washington, DC for the presidential inauguration - a trip we would especially want to make if Barack Obama won the election, there was enough local interest in making the journey, and we could find group transportation. The motives were fairly simple: to witness the crowds and celebrations (or protests) in our nation's capital while also documenting citizens' reactions and perspectives. As winter progressed, we decided this would also be an opportunity for the Independent Media Center to represent the Urbana-Champaign community and to produce a video diary that we could send home for everyone who could not join us. This is a glimpse - unfettered by mainstream media - into our experiences traveling across country, meeting new and old friends, having light-hearted and serious discussions, and being part of a massive crowd for a historic event in a historic city. read more

Police Brutality: A National Emergency - Victims Families Speak Out

LOS ANGELES, January 21, 2009 - Last Sunday saw a group of Los Angeles families and friends gather to protest at MacArthur park. The demonstrations were organized by The Coalition For Justice Against Police Murder. The rally formed into a march on the Rampart police station where speeches, testimonials and grass roots organizing techniques were given from the steps without police interference. The crowd was small, orderly and diverse. The police presence for the entire protest was absent which gave it a spontaneous and genuine feel. At the events closing the group petitioned the station supervisor by entering the facility and gently but affirmatively demanding investigative action on various deaths that allegedly were caused by LAPD misconduct. UK Indymedia believes the search and seizure was connected to postings about the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) trial, in which seven activists from SHAC were found guilty of "conspiracy to blackmail" and on January 21 were sentenced to a total of fifty years in prison.

Kent Police had e-mailed UK Indymedia earlier in the day in regards to two comments containing the address of a judge that had been posted to the site. Immigrant Rights activists gather with clergy to vigil and pray for immigration reform

Around 2 dozen people gathered the day after president Obama's inauguration to hold a vigil and pray for comprehensive immigration reform in the first 100 days of his new administration. This was one of multiple events that took place around the country raising the issue of immigration reform. An organizer at the event said that on the campaign trail both McCain and Obama had promised to make changes to the broken immigration system in the first 100 days of their administration, and that this event was hoping to softly nudge the administration to do so.

The event was composed largely of reading of scripture and prayers by clergy men and women about the Christian commandments to love our neighbor and take care of the foreigner. There were also speeches given by community organization composed of and advocating for immigrants , including the Houston Interfaith Worker Justice Center, the Central American Resource Center, and FIEL (Immigrant Families and Students in Struggle). Action at MN Trade Office in St. Paul Confronts Minnesota Ties to Israeli Attacks on Gaza

TCIMC update 11:15am: The action is over; the activists inside the trade office building chose to go outside rather than be arrested after officials called the St. Paul Police Department.

from a statement released this morning:

At 10am this morning, January 23rd, 2009, approximately 20 local residents entered and sought to occupy the Minnesota Trade Office in downtown Saint Paul demanding an immediate end to all trade between Minnesotan companies and the State of Israel. They have issued the following statement signed by some of the participants and their supporters:

"We are here at the Minnesota Trade Office today, as we should be every day, demanding an end to all business between Minnesota and the State of Israel. While the recent devastation of the Gaza strip weighs heavy on our conscience, the violent occupation of Palestine and the systematic killing of Palestinians is unfortunately nothing new. Although Palestinians, and all people, deserve sovereignty, justice, and peace, we are here today as residents of Minnesota, many of us Jewish, because state-sanctioned genocide in the occupied territories continues without relent.

Obama Inauguration Celebration Santa Cruz Style

Agusto Cesar Sandino Segundo writes, "A cynical summary: On Tuesday Jan. 20th 2009, aka Inauguration Day, the newly sworn in Citizens in Chief's of the peoples republik celebrated the installation of the latest in a long series of puppets and front men for gangster capitalism aka de'mock'cracy Amerikkkan style. Although the day remains historic in the history of race relations in this nation, and for many this is an important victory in the civil and political rights struggle, it remains to be seen how much change really lies ahead despite all the rhetoric from this young president. While this commentator believes Prez Obama has more or less good intentions, the system he rose to power in is rotten to the core and will hinder his ability to deliver on his many promises."

Prop 2 Inspires Formation of Grassroots Animal Rights Group

Mark Hawthorne writes: One of the most exciting results of Proposition 2 - California's successful campaign to ban battery cages for hens, gestation crates pigs and veal crates for calves - is that it energized activists across the United States, introducing a new generation of animal advocates to the horrors of factory farming. Many of these people had known little, if anything, about agribusiness practices. But they literally took up the Prop 2 banner, getting involved in the fight to end the use of intensive-confinement devices in California.

FBI Announces Sighting of Fugitive in BC

The Oregonian and other corporate media published articles yesterday announcing a sighting of Rebecca Rubin, fugitive in the Northwest "Green Scare" cases, who is indicted for Arson and other charges related to actions at Vail Ski Resort, a Susanville, CA wild horse corral, and other actions.

The articles are reprinted nearly verbatim from an FBI press release, and beg the question, "Why would they show their hand?" Logically, it would seem that letting Rebecca know she had been sighted (via the media) would only give her an advantage.

It is my opinion that the intention of this release is a calculated attempt to stir chatter to assist in the hunt for Rebecca and other fugitives. Have no doubt that they are listening in on the phone conversations and email accounts of anyone they suspect of having a connection to Rebecca.

This may seem obvious to some, but warrants pointing out.

On Friday Jan 23rd at about 7:45 pm 3 Baltimore Animal Rights activists were arrested while legally and peacefully protesting Foie Gras at The Intercontinental Hotel's restaurant located in the Inner Harbor area. After about 30 minutes of protest that was legal and on public side walk area- Police came from all angles in an "ambush" method- waving their billy clubs and using verbal threats to make the activists leave. 2 activists who were peacefully asking why they had to leave were cuffed. Another protester who was just arriving on the scene was first threatened by police when they saw him taking pictures with his camera phone. He walked away as asked by police and when he asked for a badge number- he was arrested. This unbelievable display of injustice just adds to the already known corruption of the Baltimore City Police.

Detainees Expose Medical Neglect in Death at Piedmont Regional Jail

Detainees in the Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville, VA speak out on the medical neglect that caused the death of Guido Newbrough at Thanksgiving. Eyewitnesses report that Newborough was in intense pain for two weeks, frequently asking for medical attention. They maintain that he never received that attention, but was instead knocked to the floor by guards and dragged on his back to the isolation unit where he remained until he suffered the massive heart attack and stroke that led to his death.

The People United was contacted by several detainees for help in getting the truth out. "They were outraged when they saw the statement from ICE in the local newspaper," Winder said. "They are afraid of repercussions by ICE or by the jail guards because they are speaking out, but were so moved by Guido Newborough's death that they felt compelled to take the risk and expose the conditions that exist in Piedmont.

HIMC Presents Gaza Ghetto - Wednesday February 4th at Rice Cinema

On January 30th, bail for BART police officer Johannes Mehserle was set at $3 million. Oakland mayor Ron Dellums had released a statement to the media late Friday afternoon saying bail was posted but the Alameda County Sheriff's Office claims he was mistaken. Mehserle claimed he was reaching for a taser when he accidentally grabbed his gun (which was loaded and with safety off) and shot to death Oscar Grant, who was lying face down on the ground.

Protesters gathered outside the courthouse for a demonstration planned to coincide with the bail hearing. After bail was granted, demonstrators marched toward 14th and Broadway and then to the Oakland Police Department headquarters. BART closed the 12th Street station. Oakland police fired tear gas and projectiles at protesters and later blocked off several roads. At least nine people were tackled and arrested for "failure to disperse." Did Darby Entrap McKay? No Verdict Yet After 2nd Day of Jury Deliberations

After 10 hours of deliberation spanning two days, the jury in United States vs. David McKay has yet to reach a verdict. The question before the jury is whether or not McKay was entrapped by Brandon Darby, activist turned FBI informant, to possess unregistered destructive devices (count 1), illegal manufacture the devices (count 2), and possess such devices that had no serial number (count 3). For the entrapment defense to succeed, the jury must decide that Darby "induced or persuaded" McKay to commit the crime, and the McKay had no "intent or disposition" to do so before meeting Darby for the first time at the beginning of March, 2008.

After seven prosecution witnesses and three witnesses for the defense, including McKay himself, closing arguments in the dramatic trial concluded Thursday. Since then, members of McKay's family, supporters, media and interested observers waited anxiously for a result in the lobby of the courthouse. Now they'll have to continue waiting at least until the jury resumes deliberations at 8:30 on Monday. (More details in story below.)
