Project Homeless Connect Santa Cruz: "Social Justice for Homeless"

One Day of Charity in Santa Cruz: A Band-Aid Event or A Transformational Experience?

On April 17th, the third annual Project Homeless Connect Santa Cruz was held inside and outside the Civic Auditorium on Church Street in Santa Cruz. Hundreds of people, most of whom are experiencing homelessness, and therefore typically marginalized and criminalized in our community, were provided with a wide range of services and some goods. According to Project Homeless Connect, which includes corporations, nonprofits, and government agencies, the organization began in San Francisco in 2004 "when Mayor Gavin Newsom challenged his county workers to create a better system of care for the homeless community."

Ashland Food Co-op found in violation of federal labor law

Ashland, OR – March 8, 2012 - A majority of workers at Ashland Food Co-op have been united since June of 2011 to improve their working conditions by organizing a union with United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 555. Ashland Food Co-op management learned of workers’ desire to organize and reacted swiftly with heavy handed tactics to try and sway workers away from unionization. The Employer’s actions included soliciting and promising to remedy grievances, providing benefits to employees that it previously refused to provide, disciplining union activists, threatening employees with more severe discipline if they voted for a union, instituting a rule that prohibited employees from discussing the union and then enforcing this rule only against employees who supported the union, and soliciting employees to sign an anti-union petition

Occupy Brings Foreclosure Defense Movement To Baltimore, Deutsch Bank Proceeds With Eviction

The movement to physically stop evictions and foreclosures made its debut in Baltimore on Tuesday, January 10th outside of the West Baltimore home of Lila Kara. Nearly 100 people associated with Occupy Baltimore assembled early in the morning to stop a Deutsch Bank foreclosure order against her house. Those assembled included neighbors, some facing foreclosure themselves, and participants from Occupy Our Homes, a working group of Occupy Baltimore.

Though initially proclaiming victory after a no-show, Sheriff’s officers and a representative assumed to be with Deutsch Bank who refused to identify herself proceeded with the eviction process on Wednesday morning, arriving unannounced. Workers changed the locks on the property and took inventory of Kara’s belongings, while about 20 people assembled in protest. Read Full Indyreader report. | DC Indymedia report on day one.

Police Accountability Work Across the US

Indymedia centerers in Rochester, Urbana-Champaign, and Santa Cruz, are critically examining current police policies and reporting on initiatives to make them more accountable.

Rochester: City Council member Adam McFadden wrote a memo to Mayor Thomas S. Richards, Police Chief James Sheppard, and City Council President Lovely A. Warren warning them that the "City of Rochester has lost control of its police force."

Urbana-Champaign: City council chambers were full at a combined meeting of the Urbana Human Relations Commission (HRC) and Civilian Police Review Board (CPRB) on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. to address racial profiling numbers collected by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The meeting was the result of a chorus of voices asking for a public conversation about racial profiling in Urbana. The “racial disparity index,”, for Urbana police rose from 1.56 in 2009 to 1.7 in 2010, the highest in the twin cities.

Santa Cruz: Six months ago, SCPD adopted Predictive Policing. What does it mean? How will we resist it?. In addition, Bad Cop focuses on police accountability, know your rights education, and the dissemination of effective tactics to utilize while documenting police in Santa Cruz County. "We seek to document the abuse of authority and highlight the double standard that some grant to those with badges. By documenting police actions – whether they are illegal, immoral or just a waste of time and resources – we encourage transparency and hold police accountable. If you are familiar with CopWatch projects, this is a way of documenting what we see when we are watching."

Video: Responding to Violence With Unity

On Sunday afternoon, December 19, 2010, the local Portland community Rallied in Pioneer Square to condemn acts of violence and support the Salman Alfarisi Islamic Center and the Muslim community of Corvallis, who have recent suffered acts of terrorism at their mosque.

Both Muslims and Non-Muslims were invited to attend and stand up next to each other, showing unity and solidarity against any form of violence against anyone, regardless of faith, race, nationality or gender.

Each spoke of the need for love and unity, and as emphasized by Hajji Mikal Hammad Shabazz, director of the Oregon Islamic Chaplains Organization, standing for Justice, rather than merely opposing injustice. Speakers on hand were from the Portland City government, the Jewish and Christian Communities, the Tigard Police Department and the Japanese-American Citizens League. Sarah Palin Book Signing Protest

12/1 On Wednesday December 1st, Sarah Palin arrived in Houston to sign copies of her new book "America by Heart" at the Borders on Kirby. In addition to the Palin fans who lined up around the block since the night before, there was a lively protest with drums and signs. Coverage on Houston Indymedia, and Ch. 39.

In addition to a long history of idiotic and offensive comments, this week, we have Sarah Palin's crazy objections to childhood obesity programs, and most recently the following quote: "Assange is not a 'journalist,' any more than the 'editor' of al Qaeda’s new English-language magazine Inspire is a 'journalist.'" Mini documentary about activists shutting down oil refinery in Britian

This is small documentary about a project called "Crude Awakening" which was about shutting down an oil refinery.

The participants succeeded in shutting it down by using flash mobs. The activists there have also created some new ideas in claiming public space, namely in using bamboo tripods. I think this is fitting given that BP is located in Britain.

Also National Geographic had an article about the oil spill in the gulf this month worth reading. It compares it to the Ixtoc oil spill in Mexico and states that they are still able to find oil tar in the region where Ixtoc happened in 1979. The information there gives no such a pretty picture about the future of the gulf region after Deep Water. VIDEO

Photos of Obama protest on 10-20

Photos of the hardy 50+ who bravely stood their ground against over 100 right-wing Tea Party or re-packaged Americans For Prosperity protestors and over 5,000 Obama supporters. Also photos of the right wingers to show how utterly confused and misled they are, in spite of their real anger/grievances. Sometimes, you don't know whether to laugh or weep! What will it take for ordinary Americans to wake up and stop being conned/manipulated by the elites and their pundits.

Well, there were over 5,000 Obama supporters, 100 right wing Tea Party/Americans for Prosperity, and 50 of us at the protest two days ago when Obama came to town to stump for Kitzhaber. But the progressive activists from Veterans for Peace, PCASC, SUPER, ISO, immigrant rights groups and others bravely stood their ground in spite of their small numbers, and did their best to get their message out. No more wars and occupations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Pakistan, no more corporate giveaways and bailouts, Money for jobs and education, and no more voting for the two-party con men, Democrats and Republicans, soaking in corporate money and corruption. If we want real change, we've got to do it ourselves, not depend on politicians, leaders and cheerleaders. Look at what the French students and workers are doing right now to fight back against the cutbacks and attacks on them by the ruling elites. Strike, Blockade, Sabotage! Enough said! So Cal Participates in the 10/10/10 Global Work Party

For the second consecutive year, the Northeast L.A. Radical Neighbors (NELA-Rad) and Converging Storms participated in the annual world-wide 350 demonstration. (Other groups were represented this year as well, including the Montrose Peace Vigil.) However, unlike last year, we organized two events: one on October 2, which coincided with Eagle Rock's annual Music Festival and thus benefited from heavy foot traffic. The second event happened on October 10 in conjunction with the other 350 activities around the world
