UC Riverside Students Disrupt Regents Meeting

RIVERSIDE (CA) January 19, 2012 - Thousands of students, workers, and community members gathered to participate in the governance of the UC system. When their participation was limited and ultimately shut off, they took direct action to ensure their voices were heard. For this, they were confronted by police from numerous agencies. Police violence broke out, and three arrests were made

Preparations for the event have been going on for months, and have included on-campus general assemblies and discussions of occupation. The camp began Tuesday night and immediately drew support from students and campers from Occupy Riverside and Occupy LA. By Wednesday, a food table was set up, as was an outreach table and a people's library. Students and faculty held many teach-ins and teach-outs to raise the consciousness of students.

But the action really began Thursday morning, when groups of students and unions members spoke to the regents during the public comment section of the meeting. Full Story: UCR Occupied in Defense of Education By Rockero

Police Pepper-Spray Students at Occupy UC Davis

In a gesture of solidarity with UC Berkeley students and faculty, and the national Occupy movement, students at UC Davis had set up tents on the main quad. UC Berkeley's Tolman Hall Occupied

On September 22nd at UC Berkeley, between 100 and 200 students marched from a rally at noon in front of Sproul Hall and entered Tolman Hall to protest against austerity measures cutting public education throughout the state of California. Demonstrators entered the lobby of the building only to be met police batons and pepper spray. Police claim that pepper spray was used in response to someone grabbing a magazine clip from one of the officers, but at least one witness says that these were two separate events, and that the magazine clip was only found later after a police officer dropped it. Students were able to take a hold of room 2308 and other parts of the first floor through the afternoon and into the evening until the police evicted them from the building. Two protesters were arrested and remain in jail.

Kelli's Childcare Collective of Atlanta Seeks to Offer More Services

Kelli's Childcare Collective of Atlanta (KCCA) is a collective of volunteers who provide liberation-based childcare, in which caretakers are queer-friendly, attentive, passionate, and progressive. We partner with organizations that recognize childcare as an institutional need. The high cost along with the low quality of childcare has a devastating impact on low-income families who are disproportionately made up of single mothers, immigrant women and families, and women of color. These groups are absolutely essential to progressive movement-building. The collective therefore provides quality, competent, free childcare for ongoing meetings and one-time events for progressive organizations. read more

Seven Emory Students Arrested in Sodexo demonstration

Seven Emory students and supporters were arrested today in a protest against Emory's contract with Sodexo.  The encampment in front of the administration building, which began Wednesday, had been continuous since then.  However at around 6:00 pm the Vice President of the university approached the encampment.  He said they were in violation of the university's rules, and needed to leave immediately.  They said they needed 15 minutes and he agreed, but a few minutes later grounds workers were ordered to tear down the tents.  They tore down all unoccupied tents, as well as all signs and banners; the occupied ones they left alone.  Then shortly thereafter the students who were still in the tents and refusing to leave were arrested for "criminal trespass" by Emory police.  They are being taken to Dekalb County jail.    read more & videos

Sit-in for Undocumented Students' Rights: Seven Undocumented Students Arrested, Face Deportation

Surrounded by hundreds of supporters, seven college students and one high school student occupied a street in the Georgia State University area today, demanding that Georgia universities refuse to comply with the state's ban on accepting undocumented students. The college students were arrested and now face criminal charges as well as possible deportation.

The demonstration was in response to a 2010 decision by the Board of Regents to prohibit undocumented students from five of Georgia's top universities. The students say that education is a human right and should be available to all reguardless of immigration status. They are calling on universities to refuse to comply with the ban.

Student Walkouts in CA & OR

Portland, OR: Within 24 hours this demonstration was planned and executed. The previous evening, members of several different labor unions, student groups, community coalitions, and political activist groups met to discuss how the Portland left should respond to the national call put out by Wisconsin highschool students for a walkout at 2pm Friday. This group met for over two hours, discussing different strategies and ideas for pulling off this emergency action.

After the main discussion was over and the decision was made to participate, the group broke into smaller working groups to devise plans for executing the various components necessary to make this successful. [...] The success of this rally is being measured not in the size of the crowd, or whether or not the Republicans in Wisconsin hear us (and I'm sure they do know about the rallies across the country against them) but the fact that local activists were able to come together, collaborate, and bring out 300 people on less than a days notice. One of the great gems that came out of the planning meeting was the motivation of the group to continue organizing together. READ MORE | VIDEO: 1 \ 2 \ 3

Modesto, CA: On March 8th, several hundred Modesto Junior College students responded to a call for a walkout against budget cuts that would result in the gutting of various departments and the laying off of faculty. Students rallied and gave impromptu speeches on how the cuts and layoffs would affect them. Also speaking at the rally were several faculty members who expressed solidarity with the students for standing with them. After rallying, students marched around campus, drawing in more students, with staff voicing their support.

The students then decided to move downtown. Unknown to the students, the mayor of Modesto was also hosting a 'protest' at the time, attended by various city bureaucrats, head police, and area mayors, to protest Governor Brown's taking away of funds for city redevelopment. On the very same day, it was announced that Modesto City School would lay-off 32 teachers, while administrators continue to make salaries in the hundreds of thousands. The few people speaking at the event and in the audience wrapped up their event (not being able to be heard over the large group of students) and disappeared.
