ASHLAND CARSHARE and Rogue Valley Transportation District are hosting a Member Drive on Sunday, December 14, from 2:00-5:00 pm at the Ashland Community Center (73 Winburn Way), to celebrate their new service and introduce their first vehicle. Come see their snazzy new Toyota Prius (it’s red!) that will initiate their future fleet. Acting Executive Director, Becky Brown, has announced that, in collaboration with the RVTD, ASHLAND CARSHARE (ACS) has been awarded a generous grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation Public Transit Division, enabling them to acquire their first vehicle and launch the long-awaited program.

December 5th 2008's Critical Mass was cold. Two years ago, 5 riders could have shown up, but last night about 60 riders departed Dupont Circle for another celebratory bike romp through their city. On a route through Shaw, U St and Georgetown, riders tribute the Brian McKenzie Infoshop and get loud cheers from U Street pedestrians.
Worcester03 Dec 2008

The on-again, off-again harassment of Worcester’s livery taxis appears to have subsided, lessening frustration and anger within Worcester’s Latino community.
Community members and taxi drivers have reported harassment of patrons and drivers and multiple civil rights violations. On multiple occasions the Worcester Police Department has shut-down business completely, sending drivers home and leaving waiting patrons needing rides to doctors’ appointments and markets stranded.
The targeting of the taxis is another attack against Latino small business owners in Worcester where these businesses are primarily comprised of Ecuadoran and Dominican owners and drivers.

At approximately 3:30pm Sunday Nov 23rd 2008 5 police officers came storming down the Hollywood Max stop with guns drawn. One police officer with what appears to be a modified shotgun possibly designed to shoot rubber bullets or gas canisters. two other officers had pistols drawn with a final gun toting officer holding an AK-47 while the last officer did not appear to have any weapons in hand and appeared to be there as backup support only.
So, in the middle of the day, in Portland Oregon the police come onto the max, with guns including an AK 47 drawn and yell for everyone to clear out of the max, this leads to a rush of people flying off the max about to trample each other, mothers with children, elderly, men, women, all fleeing from the Police.

The idea for this coming ride is going from the Culmer Metro-Rail station which is in the Civic Center area, and heading north west to Miami Springs. We did a test ride last weekend and it was a really cool ride. We wen through some industrial areas, and some beautiful neighborhoods. It's a fairly long ride and some of the roadways are pretty busy. But all in all it's a great ride.

This Sunday, November 9th will be Miami's first Cyclovia. Miami will be closing several downtown streets and part of Brickell and will only allow for cyclists to use them. I believe it will be from 10am-3pm on Sunday. We'll be meeting for this at the Government Center.

The results are in on the first ever Ashland Commuter Challenge. Thanks to all who helped reduce vehicle miles traveled like the Ashland Comprehensive Plan mandated at least as far back as 1982. Lets do it again next year!

This month's ride will be heading through downtown Miami and then to the Grove.
Minneapolis/St. Paul03 Oct 2008
Between September 11 and September 27, at least four bicyclists were killed on Twin Cities streets. On Saturday, riders are invited to take part in a memorial ride visiting the sites of these recent crashes, leaving from Saint Paul in the morning and traveling to Uptown and Downtown Minneapolis, followed by an afternoon ride to Blaine. The stepped-up assault of car culture on cyclists is not limited to the Twin Cities; activists in the Midwest are also mourning the apparent loss of a participant in August's PNC2RNC bike ride after a car struck her bike.

The ride started out on Red Square at the Evergreen State College at 5:00pm with many people joining in along the way. The mass shouted and cheered as they drove by, feeling the power they shared together. Many people were vocally opposed to the existence of cars and shouted insults and other words of anger at SUV's and expensive looking cars for the poison they spew and the lives they take. When the yuppies yelled back, some even pretended to shoot them.

Car sharing is a growing phenomenon that started in Switzerland back in 1987 and now has spread globally. Here in the United States there are car shares in places such as Boulder, Portland, San Francisco, and Eugene. The size of the carshare programs range from one car to a fleet of 100 cars. The idea of car sharing has now come to Ashland. Ashland CarShare is beginning to turn into a reality thanks to committed community members.

This Friday saw one of the largest Critical Mass bike rides Olympia has seen all year. With over 80 people celebrating anti-car culture the mass blocked all lanes of traffic, chanted things like, "Car bombs, not cars!", sang songs, harassed motorists, and spit on pro-war sign holders and anti-choice sign holders. One person, towards the end of the ride, was arrested for allegedly writing an anti pro-life message on a truck belonging to the anti-choicers.

There is a school crossing at Oregon and Vine, the kind with flashing yellow lights, and a sign depicting a child in silhouette crossing with an adult, and white zebra stripes painted on the street. But every day at least 20 Urbana school children who walk to Leal Elementary School along this route play a deadly game of “Frogger” with unyielding motorists.

This is a ride starting at the Vizcaya Metro-Rail and going over the Rickenbacker through Key Biscayne. Not quite sure where we'll be stopping on Key Biscayne yet, but it should be a nice ride.

On Friday, Sep 5, over 50 riders participated in Critical Mass. This is despite the approach of Tropical Strom Hannah, whose first rains dampened the tail end of the ride.

The National Farm Worker Ministry has a project, through its Youth and Young Adults Network (YAYA Network), to gather bicycles that are either in good condition or that can be repaired for use by farmworkers who often lack driver's licenses or reliable modes of transportation (more info below). There will be a pick-up on Monday, September 8th, in Miami so bicycles would need to be delivered prior to the 8th.
