HR 875 The food police, criminalizing organic farming and the backyard gardener

Portland15 Mar 2009
This bill is sitting in committee and I am not sure when it is going to hit the floor. One thing I do know is that very few of the Representatives have read it. As usual they will vote on this based on what someone else is saying. Urge your members to read the legislation and ask for opposition to this devastating legislation. Devastating for everyday folks but great for factory farming ops like Monsanto, ADM, Sodexo and Tyson to name a few. HR 875 | campaignforliberty.com

SC Farmers Target Forever 21

Los Angeles04 Mar 2009
February 2, 2009: Another demonstration took place outside the Forever 21 in Old Town Pasadena. The turnout was even higher than the previous action of December 13, 2008. One demonstrator reported giving a leaflet to someone entering the store. This person looked at the flier, turned around, and exited. Many other passersby showed interest. Participants were asked to contact other Forever 21 outlets (see the list following this article) to remind them of the boycott. Story and photos: Actions Against Forever 21 Continue by RP

New State Study Supports Concerns About Aerial Pesticide Spray; More Questions Remain

Santa Cruz02 Mar 2009
A report released in February and authored by a group of researchers from various organizations supports concerns Californians have had about the aerial spraying of pesticides in the Monterey Bay area in 2007. The study shows the correlation of the unprecedented bird die off and red tide with the timing of the spraying of the pesticide Checkmate.

Obama Administration Asks Court to Suppress Identity of Harmful Chemicals

Santa Cruz14 Feb 2009
Environmental leaders from throughout the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas have asked Federal District Judge Saundra Armstrong to deny the United States Environmental Protection Agency's motion to block disclosure of the chemicals used in the CheckMate pesticides sprayed on Monterey and Santa Cruz residents as part of the government's Apple Moth Eradication Program. EPA has requested Judge Armstrong to prevent disclosure of the chemicals in the spray, claiming the manufacturer's proprietary interest outweighs the public's right to know.

A Taste for Change: Brooklyn Food Conference Organizers Step up to the Plate

NYC09 Feb 2009
In many areas of Brooklyn, you can get a cheeseburger at 2 a.m. but you have to get on a bus to buy a head of lettuce. For Park Slope resident Nancy Romer, this is not acceptable.

Houston Food Not Bombs Harassed by HPD

Houston14 Jan 2009
I arrived with a pot of hot food to find a bunch of HPD officers politely asking us to find a new place to serve, taking down ID information, and willing to threaten us if we didn't comply. Houston Food Not Bombs has been harassed by cops before and has been hassled by the library before. Last night, for the first time in a year and half, the Downtown Public Library (contact them at ContactHPL@cityofhouston.net) decided to ask us to go elsewhere, this time by sending out the HPD.

Supervisor Pribilski was not stating that any law was being broken, but spoke on behalf of the "Public" Library, that they would like us to go away. This type of NIMBY oppression of the rights of the homeless has been a constant theme for FNB, causing us to move several times over the years, until reaching our current location at the Downtown "Public" Library.

Several people there to eat were very supportive, thanking us for risking such confrontations to feed them. One said he hadn't eaten in three days. [full story]

freeskool guerilla gardening

Portland31 Dec 2008
The snow is gone, and the ground is warming up! So its time to get back to transplanting and planting perennials. Now is the time to plant so they may make the most of this season to build healthy rootsystems. The class will meet in several locations, as there are a few gardens to work on, so check the schedule to see where we will meet for each class.

Local Urban CSA sponsoring Seed Exchange - Jan 3

Portland27 Dec 2008
Sunroot Gardens is an urban CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farming enterprise. We bike around, growing vegetables in people's yards and "unimproved" public rights-of-way, etc. We saved a boat-load of seeds this year from a ton of veggies, herbs, and flowers, and will be making the collection available at an Exchange on Jan. 3.

Worcester Food Not Bombs Wants to Grow

Worcester04 Dec 2008
Do you like to cook? Do you like human beings? Do you prefer food to bombs? Come to Food Not Bombs! (Noon on Sundays at Stone Soup!) Our numbers are dwindling, plus we have a hankering for some new FNB faces. (More FNB-ers means more interesting, funny, quirky folks for us to know and hug!) We know it's cold outside but we can easily bundle up and huddle together and share the warmth while we share our hot meals with the community.

USDA National Organic Standards Board Toes Bush Regime Line, Lowers Standards for "Organic" Fish, Other Seafood

DC20 Nov 2008
"Fish Head" Activists "Swim" up Wisconsin Avenue, Crash NOSB Meeting, Leaflet Attendees

On the afternoon of November 17th, a number of concerned activists and national consumer action organizations gathered for a press conference at the Heritage India restaurant to speak on the importance of maintaining high organic standards on seafood,
in response to a conference from the USDA National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) who was holding a meeting at the Savoy Hotel just one block away. The current lame-duck administration is getting in one more dig for big business against the health and well being of the people, and is now lowering the standards for "organic" seafoods from a 100% organic diet for farmed fisheries to a less-than-standard percentage of organic feed, exposing the fish to PCBs and mercury contamination, yet still allowing them to be labeled "organic"…

New Studies of LBAM Spray Inadequate, Reveal More Violations of the Law by CDFA

Santa Cruz07 Nov 2008
Just a few days before the one-year anniversary of the aerial spraying for Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM) in Santa Cruz, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) released two studies about the pesticide applications in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. While CDFA claims that these reports prove the safety of the eradication program, environmental groups and citizen advocates say that statement is misleading and point out fundamental shortcomings of both reports. Rather, they argue, they reveal another breach of the law by CDFA.

Skillshare: Radical Botany #7 The Great Harvest

Portland29 Oct 2008
In the world of plants there is one time a year when all the elements conspire to bring on the harvest. At the time of harvest the plant is at its fullness for essential oils, fragrance, nutritional health and flavor. For most plants when the plant leaf, fruit, nut or root is mature... before the seed is formed, is when it is harvested by humans. There is only one way to know this. Study the plant. Then capture the plant in its prime.

Hmong Gardeners Threatened With Eviction

San Francisco Bay Area23 Oct 2008
A group of Hmong gardeners and their allies are fighting an attempt by the City of Fresno to evict them from plots they have farmed for 13 years. The Hmong Community Garden provides food for 300 members of the Hmong community. The city seeks to replace the garden with a police substation, and city officials have recently claimed that an agreement was reached to relocate the gardeners. The gardeners denied that they agreed to be relocated, and a spokesperson accused the city of using wrongful translation to take advantage of the gardeners.

23rd International Day of Action Against McDonalds, to mark World Food Day

Portland17 Oct 2008
The 16 October of every year the F.A.O. celebrates the "world food day" (just a stupid anniversary of the foundation of the Food and Agriculture Organization by the United Nations).
The sense of this day interests us because of the cruel exploitation and killing of sentient beings.
At the end of last century, London Greenpeace (not Greanpeace, the organization defending some animal rights in order to eat them then with the clean conscience) promoted, in concomitance with the date of the FAO, a world day of resistance against Mc Donald's, one of the multinationals mostly responsible for the hunger in this world.

Fraud and Deception: The CDFA LBAM Eradication Program

Santa Cruz11 Oct 2008
Glen Chase, a Professor of Systems Management, has released a third report detailing the methodical fraud that the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Management perpetrated to attempt to create a bogus emergency eradication program for the Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM). This third report demonstrates the fraud and deception within the program strategy that CDFA Management used and is continuing to use to qualify for $100's of millions of dollars of emergency taxpayer funds, which were intended for real emergencies.

Local DIY Wheat processing yields over 600 lbs.

Portland27 Sep 2008
As reported on this website a few days ago, a group of us went out and hand-harvested a bunch of wheat from a field outside town. We have since processed it, which involved threshing and winnowing. This took a few days, many people, and yielded over 600 lbs. of wheat berries! Now it is being distributed through a creative scheme that rewards monetary investors and worktraders alike.

We threshed it on tarps in the driveway under a fir tree in the Hawthorne district. We winnowed it in front of electric fans, pouring from bucket to bucket. One helper found that a basket with just the right holes in it worked well to sift off the straw and big pieces before bringing it to the fan. This discovery led to cleaner berries and less time in front of the fans.

The grand total for the harvest: 636 lb.!

Under an arrangement that was hatched this winter, 40% of that will be divided among the people who spent time helping
