Wrongs in Civil Rights Underlying Mumia Abu-Jamal's Conviction

Philadelphia - 03 Aug 2009
Documented violations in this closely watched case convince groups as diverse as Amnesty International and the national NAACP that Abu-Jamal is the victim of double standards of justice. The NAACP approved a resolution at its centennial convention in July 2009 calling on the US Department of Justice to investigate civil rights violations in the Abu-Jamal case.

Open Letter to Amnesty International: Support the Palestinian Call for Boycott of Israel!

San Francisco Bay Area - 03 Aug 2009
From PACBI Open Letter to Amnesty International : In May, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) called on singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen to heed the Palestinian call for a cultural boycott of Israel and avoid complicity with Israel's violations of international law by cancelling his planned September concert in Israel, particularly in view of Israel's war crimes in Gaza earlier this year. Sadly, Amnesty International USA has agreed to cooperate with Cohen in dealing with Israel on the basis of business as usual.

Radical Faeries lay Burnside and Hay to rest: Welcome home one last time

Portland - 02 Aug 2009
At 8 pm PST at the Radical Faerie Sanctuary in Southern Oregon. Radical Faeries at their annual summer gathering each were given a handful of crematorial remains (of John Burnside and Harry Hay) which in unison were released to the land, thus bringing these seminal figures of gay rights home one last time.

John Burnside passed away this last fall, surviving Harry by a number of years. The life partners were among the original founders of the Radical faeries, and Harry Hay was one of the initial agitators for queer rights, as founder of the Mattachine Society, the first gay rights advocacy organization since the fall of the German Vidmar republic, agitating in a world before Stonewall. Both life-long critics of Capitalism, and the commercialization of the gay culture and the commodification of gay men, as well as Advocates of "subject-subject" consciousness.

They will be missed, but will never be silent.
They are survived by innumberable free faggots all around the world.

What most people do not know is that the Rogue Valley was one of the test plot areas for the GM sugar beet seed. You do not know where they are because no one will tell you.

URGENT ALERT: Minnesota activists jailed in Israel

Minneapolis/St. Paul - 02 Aug 2009

Via AntiwarCommittee.org - Please forward * Take action today - Facebook Group: Support Minnesota Peace Activists Jailed by Israel

We have just learned that Israeli security forces have refused entry to three U.S. activists attempting to visit the Palestinian Territories. One of them, Karen Sullivan, is being sent home on a flight tonight, and two others, Sarah Martin and Katrina Plotz have refused to leave, and are being taken into custody. They are being treated as criminals, while their only goal was to learn about the reality of life for the Palestinian people. All three should be allowed to enter the country, as millions of tourists do every year.

Given the special relationship that the U.S. has with Israel, it is no surprise that U.S. citizens would want to travel there, and see how our tax dollars are spent. In spite of its special relationship with the U.S., the Israeli government showed no regard for the rights of American visitors, whose only crime was to express solidarity with the people of occupied Palestine.

Palestinians experience repression every day. There is no way to travel to Palestinian cities, or from one Palestinian city to another, without passing through Israeli military checkpoints. Palestinian refugees who live outside the territories, have a legal right to return home, but face the same obstacles that stopped Karen, Katrina and Sarah at the Tel Aviv airport today.

Katrina and Sarah have refused to cooperate in the face of this injustice, and have been sent to an Israeli jail. They have been told they will not be allowed to enter the country, and instead will be handcuffed and forced onto a departing plane.

We urge everyone to call, write and fax the officials below to demand the immediate release for Katrina Plotz and Sarah Martin, and to urge Israeli authorities to allow both women into the country to witness the reality of life inside the Palestinian Territories, where they have been invited and are welcome. Ungar Furs and Portland Police serve activists with restraining orders!

Portland - 01 Aug 2009
Two activists have been (il)legally restrained from continuing to attend the demonstrations outside of Ungar Fur's (SW 12th and Yamhill).

This is a cheap and low blow to the first amendment rights of the activists' free speech. The fur shop and Portland police bureau are desperately trying to stifle the dedication and consistency of this campaign against Portland's last fur shop.

A number of lawyers gladly took this case for free and we are happy to announce that the appeals to the restraining order are getting filed today.

Now that Henry Louis Gates’ Jr. has gotten a tiny taste of what ā€œthe underclassā€ undergo each day, do you think that he will go easier on them? Lighten up on the tough love lectures? Even during his encounter with the police, he was given some slack. Southern California Anarchist Conference This Saturday

Los Angeles - 31 Jul 2009
LOS ANGELES – This weekend anarchists and their allies will be gathering at the second annual Southern California Anarchist Conference and Cultural Fair. The conference opens this Saturday, August 1st, at the Southern California Library for Social Studies & Research and concludes Sunday at the UCLA Downtown Labor Center.

Organizers describe the conference as, ā€œa weekend long conference centered on the political philosophy of Anarchy and Anarchism [that] brings together anarchist ideas and practice, through speakers, panels, workshops, images, music, theater and film to represent everyday struggles for justice, dignity and collective liberation. Throughout history, freedom-loving peoples have found ways to liberate themselves from the grasp of authoritarianism. It is these collective strategies that we as anarchists of the 21st century now seek to re-implement in a more efficient way.ā€ For details see: Southern California Anarchist Conference
