Frack Ban Activists with Dr. Vandana Shiva at Riverside Church

Climate justice and food justice activists rallied at the lecture of noted environmentalist and ecofeminist, Dr. Vandana Shiva, at Riverside Church today to clarify the responsibility of activists in the face of concerted pressure by pro-gas drilling industry and 'environmental' groups. Marcia Reynolds, whose family has been farming in upstate Otsego County for four generations pointed out the folly of movements that call for a moratorium on gas drilling, saying "I don’t want the drilling delayed while these companies keep buying up leases. I want it banned now".

Photos and Report Back: NW Natural Shareholders Meeting Rally

A large gathering of citizens from Washington and Oregon sent a very strong message to the shareholders of NW Natural this afternoon, opposing Liquefied Natural Gas facilities proposed for the Oregon coast, facilities which would necessitate a 217-mile highway-width clear cut across farms, forest lands and our Mt. Hood National Forest.

At least 250 people gathered at the Oregon Convention Center to let the shareholders meeting behind closed doors that this proposal is not only bad for the environment, but bad business as well.

Rally for Oregon Values at NW Natural Shareholder Meeting

Residents of the Pacific Northwest oppose NW Natural's Palomar pipeline in an effort to protect Oregon values: clean water, protected salmon runs, healthy forests, family farms and a clean energy future. NW Natural, in partnership with TransCanada Gas Transmission, is proposing the Palomar pipeline, a 217-mile natural gas pipeline that would connect to a Liquefied Natural Gas terminal on the Columbia River to the California-bound pre-existing GTN pipeline. With the LNG Palomar pipeline, NW Natural threatens hundreds of landowners in the Willamette Valley with eminent domain, while bringing heavy construction to cross 300 rivers and streams, and a 47-mile long clear-cut through Mt. Hood National Forest. A broad coalition of NW Natural ratepayers, shareholders, environmentalists, fishermen, foresters, and farmers are demanding that the company cancel the unnecessary and unethical pipeline plan.

What: Hundreds of Oregonians and Washingtonians protest at the 3rd Annual Rally to Stop the Palomar Pipeline at the NW Natural Shareholder Meeting.

When: May 27 1-4pm. Political speakers and media invited at 2:30pm.

Where: Oregon Convention Center, 777 NE MLK BLVD Portland, Or

FERC Approves Ruby Pipeline; Wyo to Malin, OR

Recent FERC approval of the Ruby Pipeline proposed to deliver natural gas from Wyoming to Malin, OR happens to be the same location where the Pacific Connector proposed from Coos Bay would enter CA. Local residents, environmentalists and others are concerned that the many miles of pipeline delivering natural gas would also cause significant damage in the event of an earthquake or other natural hazards. Furthermore this distribution into CA is coming at the expense of neighbor states and decreases the chance of CA ratepayers ever obtaining true energy independence.

The Indypendent Issue 149: Nuclear Shock: While Obama touts nuclear power as a green energy solution, Southwest communities resist uranium mining boom

Indypendent editor Jessica Lee and Indigenous Action Media member Klee Benally report on uranium mining in the Southwest in the latest issue of the Indypendent:

“The American Southwest has again become ground zero in the debate about nuclear power.

Since December, miners have resumed crawling deep into the earth on the edge of the Grand Canyon to mine high-grade uranium ore at the Arizona 1 Mine, which had been closed since the late 1980s. Owned by the Canadian Denison Mines Corp., it is the first uranium mine to open in northern Arizona since nuclear power again became a popular idea in Washington within the last decade. The greater Grand Canyon area faces a possible explosion in the number of new uranium mines.

The price of uranium has rebounded in recent years due to a surge in reactor construction throughout the world and thanks to political support from the White House, starting with George W. Bush and reinforced by Barack Obama. The price has varied from $10 to $138 per pound since 2001, and is currently valued at $41.25 per pound.” READ MORE | MORE FROM ISSUE 149

Stop the White Stallion Coal Plant in Matagorda County, TX!

by Rising Tide Houston to the Open Publishing Newswire: A new coal-fired power plant in Matagorda County, TX will endanger the public health of residents in the region and fuel global warming. Please take 2 minutes to sign this petition and then send off the email. Get in contact if you would like to become more involved in stopping this facility!

Texas is already due to experience increasing levels of drought and more frequent and intense natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods; among other effects of climate change. At a time when the science is clear that world greenhouse gas emissions needed to have been decreasing already, emissions continue to rise (not even level out). The building of a new coal-fired power plant anywhere is insanity.

But even aside from global warming, the proposed White Stallion plant is not far from Houston, and the pollutants are expected to blow over through our city occasionally. We are already surrounded by facilities that have us breathing unsafe levels of cancer- and asthma-causing chemicals..the last thing we need is another coal plant! Not to mention the residents of Matagorda County. [read the full article]
