Medical Marijuana Proponents Host Fundraiser in Felton

On August 28th, the new Santa Cruz County chapter of Americans for Safe Access (ASA) held a fundraiser in Felton, CA. It was the local chapter's first public event. ASA, based in Oakland, is the largest member-based organization of patients, medical professionals, scientists and concerned citizens working to ensure safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic uses and research.

The 41st annual July 4 Marijuana legalization parade ran into some police problems, with two arrested and what appeared to be several others detained but released after Park Police dove into the starting rally, then retreated under pursuit from the crowd with several in custody.

First Annual High Times Medical Cannabis Cup in San Francisco

DC Council Votes for Medical Marijuana With Limits

May 4, 1020: Twelve years after 69 percent of DCvoters passed a medical marijuana initiative, the City Council took its second vote on a bill that will regulate and enact Initiative 59, the Legalization of Marijuana for Medical Treatment Initiative. The Council rejected several amendments including explicit civil protections re employment, housing etc. An amendment for distribution centers to be operated on a nonprofit basis was also rejected. A final vote, is still expected before the bill is sent to the Mayor. A provision of the bill allows the Mayor discretion to increase the amount from 2 to 4 ounces. Thousands Attend the International Cannabis and Hemp Expo at the Cow Palace

The International Cannabis and Hemp Exposition took place at the Cow Palace in Daly City on April 17th and 18th. The expo, which had the first permitted area for the use of medical marijuana, was the largest event of its' kind to hit Northern California. Prominent members of the cannabis community discussed a wide-range of topics, however the main buzz, on and off stage, was the initiative to "legalize, control, and tax cannabis in California," which is to be decided by voters in the state during the November 2010 elections.

Maryland Senate Passes Medical Marijuana Bill

ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND — Apr 10, 2010, with no discussion or objections, the Maryland Senate voted 35-12 to pass SB 627, a bill that would allow qualified patients to be recommended medical marijuana by their doctor and receive safe access to their medicine through state-licensed distribution centers. Medical Marijuana Activist Roger Mentch Prepares For Third Trial in San Jose

Roger Mentch, founding member of The Hemporium, a Santa Cruz County medical marijuana collective located in Felton, has been met with more resistance. Santa Clara County recently incarcerated Mentch, as well as Laura Eldridge, a disabled patient. Mentch spent five months behind bars at Elmwood Jail in Milpitas. He has been out of out of state custody since August 2009, and his next court date is scheduled on Friday, March 19th in San Jose. Mentch argues that he has been the victim of entrapment by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Santa Cruz City Council Votes to Ban Additional Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

On Tuesday, March 9th, the Santa Cruz City Council voted 6-0 to support a recommendation from the city staff which bans the opening of an additional medical marijuana dispensary in Santa Cruz. This was the first reading of the vote and there will be a second vote in two weeks to finalize the ruling.

Under the new ordinance, Greenway Compassionate Relief and Santa Cruz Patients Collective (SCPC), the two existing medical marijuana dispensaries, will be permitted to operate a cultivation facility up to 3,000 square feet, which must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The new ordinance specifically bans any new dispensaries from opening, and it also specifies that the entire city is off-limits for dispensaries, except for two industrial zones in the Westside and Harvey West area.

Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Shut Down in Fresno

On Monday, February 9, police arrested Rick Morse, the owner of Med Mar, the last medical marijuana dispensary in the City of Fresno. Morse was arrested for violating a court order which closed about one dozen dispensaries in January.

WAMM Remains Vigilant While Settling Case Against Feds

The Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM), a collective providing cannabis under California's 1996 Compassionate Use Act (Prop. 215), along with the city and county of Santa Cruz, have reached a settlement in their unprecedented lawsuit against the federal government. WAMM's case was prompted by the US Drug Enforcement Administration's raid of their medicinal garden in Davenport on September 5, 2002, in which armed agents terrorized residents and patients, and seized more than 160 cannabis plants.
